Question Passenger side mirror?

Hi all,

Very nice Pelican website and boards here. I have a '78 911SC and am wondering if it's supposed to have a passenger side mirror. Or were there certain years when it was optional? I have a hunch that one of the PO's deleted it when the paint was redone, but thought I'd ask those who might know.

Thanks,

Phil

i have a 78 without the passenger side mirror. you could tell if it was an after production delete (by previous owner) by looking on the door panal for the adjustment "joystick". i dont know if it would be on the driver or passenger side but there would be one.

i like the look, but its a nightmare to see very good w/o it. i explored putting one on but the mirrors are like 250 bucks (thats a bunch of beers and a hooker). if you are going to be doing it, do a search. it seems that the passenger side unit mounts in a slightly different location than the driver side.

I think most all years had the pass side mirror as an option, certainly the SC's, and I am pretty sure at least through '89.

Thanks guys. Guess it just didn't come with one on that side. There's no sign of a joystick controller (other than drivers side) for another mirror. I also kinda like the look, it can be hard to see sometimes.

My "77" came with both and I have the joy stick also, when I pulled them apart I found out they were also heated when the rear defrost knob is pulled on the dash.

My 78 has both and indeed they are mounted differently. On my car, only the driver side mirror is electric. Passenger side is manual. I don't think they are heated, but I could be wrong.

In any event, they are both coming off sometime this winter to be replaced by 964 aero mirrors when I repaint.

ditto and,
I have a small steering wheel with good hand grip, and use it as a 2 hand grip to pull myself foreward and then spin around in both directions. It becomes a natural body move real fast.. like pressing on the clutch.

Autobahn Mirror = Quick Solution

It may not meet the purist taste, but I have one of those inside-the-car (sticks on the windshield) Autobahn mirrors on my passenger side -- works like a charm. No view obstruction because I have it near the windshield frame. Also nice side benefit: throwing the car cover on a car with one external mirror (my '76) is much easier than on a 911 with two
exterior mirrors (another family 911, '85).

My Carrera 88 has both (electric) mirrors, they are also mounted in slightly different positions:
-drivers' side, the mirror base is about a good inch below the (upper) "slit" wherein the window lowers into the door
-passenger side, the mirror base is mounted in the very "corner" between the door and the windshield upright roof post
Looking from the front of the car, the driver' side mirror is somewhat "lower" than the passenger side mirror.
I guess Porsche very intelligently built in proper compensation for the different "lines of sight" from the driver's eyes towards the respective mirrors.
