A little confused on 245 or 225 on 15"

Hi everyone ..

I need to get get a set of tires , to fit my sc flared 1970 3.6 liter RS clone ..

I have a set of Al Reed polished wheels coming back
size is 7 + 8 x 15 " fuch

What is the best tire combo ??? that works well

245/50 15 rear and 205/50 15 front
or
225/50 15 rear and 205/50 15 front

Please let me know

Thanks to all in advance

Thanks

Joe

IMO, the 245 looks pinched and unattractively balloon-like on an 8" wheel. I went from that size to a 225. Of course with all that 3.6 torque, every little bit helps...

I looked at the manufacturer specs for a 245 50 15 and it looks like they would be fine for an 8" wheel

size rim range rim width tread height
245/50ZR15 6.5-9.5" 7" 9.6" 9.1" 24.7"
225/50ZR15 6-8" 6" 8.9" 7.9" 23.9"

And the 225 50 would be at the far outside of the recommended wheel width. I'd probably go with the 245 50 myself.

Also, I would go with a 205 55 15 since that would put the tire height more even between front and rear
tire size height
205 50 23.1"
205 55 23.9"
225 50 23.9"
245 50 24.7"

Me two, I run 225/50/15s on all four, 7and 8 x 15 fuchs. I think I will try the 245s when the 225s where out on the back. The 225s look great on a 15x7 on the front of a slightly lowered car. Thoese 245s do look pinched but maybe a different brand would look different?

If I'm reading this right, the mfr's "spec rim" width is 6"? For a 225/50 tire?

Manufacturers goal: to sell as many tires as possible by specifying as broad a fitment range as can be imagined.

My goal: to pick the tire that fits the rim best. If you've ever compared a given tire pinched on a tiny rim, vs the same tire mounted on a wider (within reason) rim that properly supports the sidewalls, the handling feel is much better on the latter.

Thanks a bunch !

do the 225/50/15s fit on 7" rims on the front fine ??
or do you need to modify the fenders or alignment ??

So would the best set up then be ...

245/50 15 rears
225/50 15 fronts /

Let me know

Thanks

Good luck EW, the only 245/50 in a V or Z rating I could find for my 15x7/8s were the Dunlops, but everybody had them on back order. That was about 4 months ago, maybe the factory has produced a new batch. I ended up buying Yoko AVS ES100 225/50 rear & 205/55 rear. IMO the 225/50s look smaller than the 205/55s. I wish I could have found some 245s, I think they would probable look better.

Yeah, good luck finding 245's in a 15" tire, especially if you want a DOT track tire. I think Hoosier is the only game in town but not a good option if you drive your car to the track.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If you drive or don't trailer, the economcs of a 15 wheel for track use is not good. For this reason, I am going to use my 7 and 8x16 fuchs for track, and drop the 7 and 8x15 fuchs on the 83 that's for sale. All in all, they are nice light wheels and will probably serve someone well if they are not going to track the car.
