checking valve guide tolerance
 

My first valve job is on the near term 'to do' list and i'm curious what all I can 'see' with the covers off. I get the impression from some posts that I can 'wiggle' something to get a feel for valve guide wear. Is that true? what am I looking for?

4] - check the sides of your rocker arm shafts for oil leaks
- have the valve in a 1/2 -3/4 open position and use a screwdriver to try and rock the valve
- look for oil on spark plugs
- press each closed valve down hard with your hand to check for broken valve springs.. you'll figure what's good after doing a few.
- get a torque wrench and set for cylinder head torque lb.ft. Don't loosen nut. Check that all are set. 4 stud nuts per cyl.
- wiggle rocker and leave in open clearance position before checking valve clearance. Have extra feeler blades.

I own 101 Projects, a nice reference... but I was looking for any additional insight. Not cracking the engine open anytime soon, but when I do... I'll buy the engine book. I did a search... valves, guides, tolerances, etcetera... couldn't fine anything specific to what I was looking for.

Hi Bernie, If you have an oil use problem or some smoking on de-acceleration, your guides are probably bad. I have an 87 with only 69,000 miles (when I bought it) and it smoked a lot. I was using a quart every 150 miles. I had a shop called Autocraft in Toledo OH do the heads for me. Bad valve guides will cost about $2500 if nothing else is needed.

the engine book will give you a wonderful understanding of how these engines are designed.. You'll be able to keep up with engine discussions here and you'll be ahead of the curve when it's time to crack the case, or diagnoise possible engine problems. When others are having problems you'll be "up" on the situation. There's not much to be intimitated with when you have the tech books and this BBS.

so you know how to check for valve play now, right ?
