It's hard to believe that someone has connected something else to that wire, but you never know what some will do to their cars. On some cars, 911SCs, the alt wire went to starter then to the battery. This may be the case on your car. You'll have to go under the car and check the wires at the starter. Have Fun Loren '88 3.2 |
My ignorance of all things electrical is showing through. I misunderstood the Bentley diagram about the factory alarm. There is a wiring diagram in the back that shows the alarm going through the fuse box.
I'm still confused about what could possibly pull 40mA in the starter circuit so will check out the starter wiring next time the car is jacked up. In the mean time I bought a new battery and will install it tomorrow to get this beast back on the road. |
I just checked a 911 3.2 Paris-Rhone alternator (just rebuilt) with a new
style OEM regulator. The current drain/draw is less than 5ma. Therefore, a good rebuilt/new alt. should NOT be causing your 40ma drain. It's still possible that alt. may have a junk regulator or the diodes may have a high reverse leakage current. There's nothing back there on a 3.2 other than the alt. and starter, at least there shouldn't be. Have Fun Loren '88 3.2 |
I put the new battery, fuses, and relays back in and the car fired up just fine. New battery shows 12.8 V from pole to pole and 14.4 with the car running so it looks good. The 40mA drain was still there. So damn the consequences, I started to yank out the Clifford alarm. What a pain in the @$$. I've got about half of it out so far and the drain is now 80mA so I'm definitely on to something here. Something I've touched today in the wiring for this alarm has changed the drain so its just a matter of time before I find it now. There are little blue plastic vampire taps on various wires where the alarm was wired in. On the ground to the light in the trunk and on various wires under the dash. I also found a small 9Volt outlet tapped off the yellow wire coming off the ignition. Anyway, its a mess now but by tomorrow all this crap should be out and hopefully I'll have this power drain solved.

doesnt your alarm have a main power supply line? disconnect that one first.
