Hey Listers,..Sent my PC'S out for a professional Inspection,..and a lite hone,..Well I get them back and the top 3/4 of an inch had been sanded !!! around in a circle..to remove the carbon build up...and now there's a 2 tone finish which means they sanded the coating ...So how much of a crime is this,. Hell I know better than to do that,. but maybe its not an issue,. but I'am not happy..??? I know that the top compression ring will cross into the sanded area by a 1/4 inch or better,So now what ........Thanks Frank

If the "sanding" was done on an area that does not come in contact with the compression ring, then your fine. If it does, I'd say you're probably in trouble.
The Alusils can't be honed anyways - it supposedly destroys the coating. If you wish to reuse them, they must be reused as is... -Wayne

i use a fresh safety razor blade to carefully shave off the carbon, without disturbing the finish.

Technically speaking they're not coated. They're etched to expose the silicone to the surface. I would imagine they could be restored but the money might be better spent on a set of Nickasil P+C's than spending money restoring only to end up with a set of used Alusils.

Honing Alusil cylinders...as Bobboloo pointed out doesn't remove any coating, but it does cause galling, which in turn "clogs" the exposed silicon substrate. Actually, I'm really realying info from the re-ring alusils thread on the rebuild page...interesting stuff. Flmont, for what its worth, try running a sctoch brtie pad with some silicon paste inside the bore for a few passes. It may just clean the surface of any extraneous material left behind by a sanding (or honing). Snowman also suggested a grape stle flex hone (small silicon impregnated balls) that might just do the same thing. I think it would be a relatively small $ experiment on a big $ problem. Also, check out the re-ring thread on the rebuild page. From what I recall rodinone has offered to do some very controlled etching tests that may just save those cyls, but you'll have to contact him directly...from what I have read, he seems to know which way the wind is blowing concerning the subject.

Sorry to hear that you are having these kinds of problems Frank. It sucks when you rely on somebody that is supposed to know what they are doing and you end up doubting everything they do.
I dont know what to say about it other than I hope this works out ok for you.

Frank, I hope that this works out one way or another. Who honed/sanded the cylinders for you? (We try to look out for one another around here).

Frank,
I am not familar with the laws in AZ., but I would suggest taking several pictures of the damaged area. Then take the 6 cylinders to two reputable Porsche shops. If they will cooperate have them evaluate the usability of the ruined cylinders in writing. Then get an estimate for new P&Cs and advise the offending shop of the situation, and that you intend to pursue the matter in civil court. Pay your bill. If the shop refuses to make good on P&Cs you probably have recourse in a court of law. Consult a lawer if you feel it necessary. Larry Harris

flmont,
no problem...I really hope things work out for on the C's. My SC will eventually need to rebuilt, and I know that at times I'll have to put my parts in the hands of "experts"...wish I could do it myself... R/ Dustin |
