Torsions for a DE SC 3.2

I posted this on the autocross/race forum but thought I'd check in with all. Let me know what you think.

"My '78sc 3.2 is going to be a DE car. It will have to be driven to/from the track so I'm trying to find a suspension that will not rattle out all of my teeth out while driving to the track but also will perform well. Also, I see this car going club racing in 2 years so I do not want to go too soft this time out, only to have to do it again in 2 yrs.

I'm leaning towards 23/31's bars, w/bilstein sports. I'll leave the stock sways for this season and eventually go for adjustble ones down the road.

Anyone out there with this 23/31's still driving on the street?

Thanks,"

I've got an 85 3.2 and have been thinking about 22/29 or 23/31 with Bilstein sports but haven't yet decided which way to go. Another related question that came up is do you have to revalve your bilstein sports to work properly with the new bars. I'm leaning toward the 22/29 combo since I also drive my car to work.

I have 23 and 30 hollow t-bars in my '76 Targa. It is a wide body conversion with spasers. Some think that makes a big difference and the bars aren't as stiff as if it had no spasers. I also have a stock 3.0 motor from a '78 SC. I can tell you the car is a dream on the track and not so bad on the road. It is a daily driver. I also have Bilstein Sport shocks and a 930 front sway bar. Sounds a lot like the setup you are aiming at. Go for it you will not be sorry. Consider the bronze bushings while you are in there.

Craig, I bought 22/29 Sander torsion bars, sent my Bilstein Sports back to the factory for revalving, installed Carrera sways, all new polygraphite bushings, turbo tie rods, Tarett adjustable rear drop links & a Rennline triangulated strut brace bar. I did alot of research & this seemed the most prudent means to upgrade my suspension. I plan to do Autocross, DEs, & make my way into racing. I should finish my suspension next week, but then I'm on to the next project. I am installing a RS plush carpet kit & door panels, new dash, visors, roll bar, 5 point harnesses & bar, Corbeau FX1 wides. After that I'll have some SSIs & a Dansk 2in/2out installed, put a gell cell into the smugglers box, then finally get it all aligned & corner balanced.

21/31 or 22/31 are the preferred choices according to my supplier. i went with 22/31 and the rears are not too harsh on the street. i should have the fronts installed by monday.........

"harshness" is typically causd by shocks, not springs. Adjustable shocks are nice in the sense that you can stiffen them up to match the springs nicely for the track, then soften them up for street duty.

Are there good adjustable options for an SC with bilstien ( and Bilstien struts) all around?

Thanks for the input guys..... still torn betweeen 22/29's or 23/31's though.

Paul, I like what you have done.... want to come out to Denver and do it all over again? There's some great skiing out here

Rob, you make a good point, maybe I should consider Koni's instead of the Bilstiens sports I was planning on going with. That way I could dial it back for the ride to/from.

Jeff C, It is my understanding that you can order Koni's for the Bilsteins struts up front so you can get the adjustability you are looking for.

I have 23/31s on my 2200lb '73.

The car is primarily an autocrosser, but is occasionally driven on the street, and is always driven to/from autocrosses.

It's stiff. The last quarter mile to my house has pretty poor pavement, but other than that, it's not too bad on the street. If the car is going to race, you will be sorry if you go for a street ride. I'm running 17" Fikse's, but you could always go with 15" wheels for the street, and drop the pressure a bit to improve the ride, and increasing the pressure for track duty.

No regrets here.

btw, I don't think Bilstein Sports will be very harsh, but everyone has a different level of tolerance.
