my maiden voyage!

well i figure Christmas morning would be the best time to drive an unregistered, uninsured car. (minimum traffic, sympathetic cops) after 3+ months of working on my 911, i finally got behind the wheel! i took it easy, because this car hasnt been driven for more than 11 years. except for the spongy brakes from my caliper rebuild yesterday, and the minor inspector gadget smokescreen from the crud burning off the heat exchangers, it was a BLAST! smooth motor, taut suspension, unbelievable music fromt the flat six...

wish i could have put some gas in it, the cops were filling up there too. just drive on, eyes forward

i cant get this goofy smile off my face! next month i am smogged exempt so it is off to the DMV to get legal

merry Christmas! thanks for all the help everyone. (you know who you are)

Cliff,

Sounds like cause for celebration! The grin does not go away. Happy holidays!

There is never a 'good' morning to drive an uninsured car. If you had been stopped by those cops, two out of three, i.e., no regisration, no ins or no dirver's license, is an automatic tow. At least here in Long Beach. And we need that law, here anyway. I called my ins co and said I needed rider effective immediately. No problem.

On a nicer side, congrats on the ride. I remember the first lap around the block in my S after a month of thrashing. It was a big moment even thought the thing was running like *****. Every ride is better as you/I go along sorting out all the fixes.

i actually have to agree with you Zeke. i took a big chance that morning, but something in me made me have to bend the rules a bit. for awhile there, i was constantly chasing problems around the car. i fix one, it makes another one show up. my hands were all scratched up, i ruined a bunch of t-shirts, my girlfriend now thinks i have a compulsive obsessive disorder (i rebuilt five calipers! the first one i did, didnt seem right, had to redo it). the liscense plates on the car last saw a registration sticker in 91, so it has been a real long time since anyone drove this thing. i had to drive it to remind myself why the busted knuckles are ok. i personally think of myself as a crappy mechanic, BUT i am getting better! 911's are SWEET!

Unfixed, congrats, I would have done the samething. Do your hand a favor & pick up a pair of these Ironclad Wrenchwork, they're awesome.

They're a bit spendy at $25, but IMHO well worth it. I have a pair of Mechanixs I use for the real greasy stuff, but don't like them nearly as much as the Ironclad gloves.

Here you go:

I would check them out at the store, I was able to squeeze into a small pair & I'm pleased I got them a touch small. I rarely have to take them off because they're so adroit.
