250hp from SC motor?
I'm looking to get 250 reliable horsepower out of an SC motor that's gonna be used in a 6 conversion for my 914. I haven't purchased the motor yet, but I do have an opportunity to get a low milage SC for a fair price. I've done a little research and so far the best I've come up with is 3.2-3.3 liter conversion with 46mm PMO carbs, cams, and an electromotive ignition. What's my best choice for cams considering this car probably isn't gonna see any track time? Thought? Opinions?

your are goin to get a lot of opions and mine is 250hp is pretty ez.You just have to figure out N/A or not. IMO the turbo is refreshing- with all the newer stuff available you can make more then a strait line car out if .in the old days when the boost came on you just held on for dear life..Like I said there carbs. cis, supper chargeand some other options and in bettween

I am currently running a 3.0 cis sc engine in my 914 with short gears, because of the cost of the modifications that you described, it may be ultimately cheaper looking for a 3.6. Or wait to see how rfngs turbo kit comes together and plumb it in.

Forced induction is definitely something I have considered. Turbocharging is definitely out of the question seeing how this motor is going into a 914. There's gonna be a lot of fitament and fabrication issues. I have seen some nice supercharging systems for the SC motor but, since I haven't seen one installed in a 914, it seems a bit hit and miss. It would be great if someone out there had a supercharged six in a 914 to provide as a reference for those considering this as a performance option. I really think at this point my best option is to keep the car N/A.

I hope to put it into my 914 when the time comes, it has been done before I just cant find the link to point you there. the plumbing would be worth the trouble considering the performance gains.

Early SC botton end. 98mm P&Cs (9.8:1 CR) S cams or GE 60s or maybe even GE80s Electromotove Ignition Weber 46s Early SC Heads with larger intakes Headers Should make around 250-260 HP.

Your car is the exception, because your not sparing any expense, and getting the entire car done over top to bottom. For me, as appealing as are the modifications you plan on your engine, I think a turbo on my 79 3.0 SC engined 914 will be plenty for me to handle around town. Achtung GTI follow Karls lead if you can afford it, if you can't keep your mind open to other options as I am. Chappy

46mm is too big, unless you're going to be doing lots of on track, high-rev driving.
This is what you need to get about 270 HP: 3.0 Case 3.0 Crank + Rods 3.2 Big Bore RSR 10.5:1 pistons/cyls HPX Ignition (dual) Twin plugged heads, say 35/36 ports (more if you're on the track with the 46s) PMO 40s or Weber 40s Mod S camshafts Approx cost - $13K in parts alone (incl core motor) -Wayne

Re: 250hp from SC motor?

I respect everyone's opinion on this board. Mine, however, varies from what's been mentioned: 250 hp out of an SC engine will entail (most probably) next to no bottom end, which will make it a bee-yatch to drive in any city situation. If a 914 with a stock 180 hp SC engine won't get your blood going, you need a transfusion... ![]() The reason I say this is there's many other (and possibly cheaper) options to consider. ...like gearing. ...and suspension. ...and further weight loss since the 914 is already fairly light. With that said, if you want to see close to 250 hp, I'd go with a 3.2. I'd chip it, put on a good exhaust and muffler, and make sure the valve guides and rod bolts are in order. Then I'd rev the daylights out of it, while enjoying the nice low-end torque the 3.2 is supposed to provide. P.S. if you go the 3.2 route, make sure your transmission can handle the torque. I'm not scholared on 914s. I don't know what type of tranny (901, 915, etc) they have. P.P.S. the guy who owns GPR up in N. Calif. did the 3.2 transplant in his 914. So you might want to ask him about it. Good luck!

Why not a Carrera 3,2 engine? A MAF kit and a backdated exhaust should get it close to 250HP.
