18 " wheels for 85 Carrera

is it possible to put on a set of 18" wheels on a 85 Carrera, if so, what would be the rims size and tires? Any body with some pics ?

eyue, You can fit 18's on your car. The rim widths are 8 front and 9 rear with a 235/40 tire in front and a 265/35 in the rear. There are others that fit but this is the widest!

Cheers, James

With those wide tires, will I have to shave some of the inside fender ? I am afraid these tires might rub, due to my lower setting !!!

You will most likely need to roll your front fenders, and probably your rears, also. Of course, you won't know for sure until you mount the wheels/tires.

Are there any downsides to fitting 18s to a Carrera?

I would guess one would end up with a much harder, less absorbant ride. Possibly some wheel damage if its used on a lot of potholed roads.

Actually I was thinking of performance, it definitely will looks great, but how much will it slower the car, plus I do not have power steering, any downside on the steering column ? It is quite heavy during parking as it's now !!!

With 235/40x18 at the front you'll most likely get a lot of tramlining. I would also expect the steering to be rather heavy.

I think Bill Verburg runs 18s or is it 17s..? Can't remember, but he has BIG wheels that's for sure. I think the has rolled his fenders.

Also there was a thread recently on 18s for narrow cars (SC/Carrera). Try to search for it.

BTW I just downsized from 17s to 16s on my Carrera

One of the reasons for me on thought of changing to 18 " is due to the availability of tires in 16 ", though I love the looks of the black fuchs, the tires just looks too thick.

The biggest downside is ride quality with an early suspension. I can tell immediately with an increase from 16 to 17" rims. Going to 18" would be brutal. For performance and track use, it is worth the ride quality sacrifices I suppose. For street use on a car's suspension that was designed 25 years ago, it may be a bit much. Many of the newer cars are designed with much larger sized wheels integral with the suspension. In fact, I think Porsche put out a factory bulletin indicating not to install 18" wheels on these early car for problems. People still do it and it works though. You might want to somehow borrow a set to try out before purchasing, at least if you value not having a skipping cd player.
