tap tap tap
I did my first valve adjustment and looking back, it will be much easier the next time. However, there is a tap tap tap sound. I tried using a cut hose to hear each valve cover, but didn't hear the crisp tap tap tap sound. The tap tap tap may have been there before, but I'm now keenly aware of it. So here's my quesiton...
Is the tap tap tap from a valve? If so, is the valve adjusted higher than 0.004" or lower than 0.004"? Also, will it hurt the engine to run a while with this tap tap tap sound? O.K. so that was more than one question. TYIA, Craig

for sure you want to know what it is.......is it going the same speed as the crank??or about halve that?? if it about 1/2 it is valve related and probly is a loose valve......no sweat perfection comes with time and at least you are doing something!
So I guess the ez thing is recheck your work.

The tap, tap, tap sound is most likely from a loose valve. Don't worry most first time adjusters have the same problem. The best way I have found to figure out what .004 feels like, is to use a micrometer set to .004 and run your valve adjuster through it.

Is there a way to figure out which valve is loose before taking the cover off?

Try to isolate to which side of the motor first, then either the exhaust or the intake valves. Then you can use a mechanics stethascope or a piece of small rubber tubing placed near you ear ( just becarefull not to get anything caught in the fan or belt).
But since this is your first atempt, I would suspect that you have more than one valve out of adjustment. |
