WOW car weighs 2280 lbs, how accurate are truck scales
This seemed a little light!
73T with SC motor, FG race buckets, Roll bar, RS FG bumpers, tail and rear seat delete. Half tank of gas, me not in the car and no spare tire. Are truck scales accurate to 100 lbs you think?

I think if they're DMV 'certified' they should be. Could be that it can't accurately measure a puny sub 10k lb load.

They should be. If they are used for measuring for sale of any kind, they have to be checked regularly by the Weights & Meassures people.

The scales at the local dumps are accurate to within 25 lbs

I think your weight is about right, my car in similar trim (except with 2.4 MFI) is 2180 lb and I can think of places where I might have saved most of the 100 lb. difference

These scales are used at a big papermill, they weigh recycle paper in and new product out. They are "state of the art" and only a year old. I just cant believe something calibrated to weigh 80K lbs would be that accurate under 3000 lbs but I will take it.

Yep Craig's right... I take my car to the dump all the time, just to check on the current weight loss attempts.

Hehe
'I take my car to the dump all the time...' Something you'd expect to hear out of the mouth of a mullet sporting guy in a track suit driving his 78 camaro :P

Do they charge you to weigh it at the dump?

It's true that W&M certifies the scales, but I wonder if they certify the scale for such low weights. Or rather, if the percentage error below 10% of full range is allowed to deviate beyond the linearity of the 10-90% range. I could just be overly skeptical.
Here is a test, next time you go to the scale, bring a 20 lbs dumbbell with you. Weight the car with the dumbbell on and off the car. There is a scale a few miles from my house...when the winter projects are done, I'll make a visit with a 20 lbs dumbbell...no you nits...I'm 185lbs! ![]() |

That weight doesn't sound so far off to me. My 1978 which is pared down as far as I can go without f/g bumpers weighs 1100 kg without me in the car. That works out to 2450 lb or close to it.
I weighed my car on the truck scale where I work - it's also checked by W&M regularly. I "calibrated" this scale by standing my own fat arse on it without the car and sure enough it pegged me at 100 kg, which is 220 lb which is what I weigh with my boots on if you know what I mean. Souk's suggestion to weigh the car with and without a 20 lb weight will only tell you part of the story. The accuracy of a scale is different than it's precision. The question earlier was whether the scales were accurate down to in the one ton range, not whether it can discern 2000 lb from 2020 lb. Anyway - I think those scales are pretty accurate at one ton. At least the truck scale at my plant appears to be.

Sounds close. The '72 with me and sport seats weighs in at 2525. My Corbeaus are 60lbs lighter than the sports. Without me saves another 210. That's 2255.

I think they're accurate. The truck scales I used and TRE's corner-balance set up were very close with each other when I weighed my car -- within five pounds as I recall.

You guys are beating this in to the grd...just call the [peo that calibrate them Philps for one) and they will give you the low dwn.To my understanding wather, barameter and stuff affects them...but get the low dwn
And I think you will find out scales that big anywhere all suffer from the same anomalys (till you get to nukular) and I dont know how to use spell check. Suffern here in the cold in Coupeville WA
