removing hand brake/htr control/hand throttle assy

Can someone explain how to remove the hand brake assy? I want to install a new hand throttle link. feels like maybe the brake cables are keeping me from lifting it up far enough to work on it?
thanks
Ken

You can actually remove the whole assembly, but will leave the heater control lever where it is. You'll have to pull off the red end of it, so it will fit through the slot that it goes through in the base. Just unbolt the 3? bolts (I think they are 10mm), then remove the red knob, then remove the nuts on the ends of the shaft that goes through the hand brake. It's what it pivits on. Keep an eye on how the washers are in sequence with the throttle lever and the heater lever. then you can lift it up far enough to see the two thingamigigs that conect the brake cable to the lever. I was able to just pivit one off, then the other. You'll see what I'm talking about when you're in there.

It's out.

Reinstall is the same in reverse. Just remember to put the washers in the same way. Two of them have a small tab that goes into a slot on the assembly. You'll see. My PO had them sticking out instead of in. That made the two levers move down when I would want them to stay up.

I went through this recently and instalkled the hand throttle lever, but I inadvertently disconnected the emergency brake. I'll have to fix that this winter as the car is up on jack stands with the wheels off for the winter. Does anyone have any helpful hints as to how to reconnect the emergency brake while also keeping the hand throttle lever in position. I must not be as coordinated as you guys because this was NOT EASY at all... Thanks!

Art,
I don't know if there is a trick or not, but taking out one of the seats makes a huge difference in being able to get you fingers in there and work it. I also used a two pairs of long needle nose pliers to wiggle everything in place before sliding the pin in. It's a pain but it is doable.

Pat,
Thanks, I'll take the seats out and give it a try as soon as I have the heater hooked up in the garage. It's cold out there during our Michigan winters and my fingers get stiff and cold. Thanks again!!

You might find a tad more room to work in there if you back off the adjustment on the ebrake cables. There is also a clevis pin connecting the two ebrake cables to the draw bar (old horse tack term, I have no idea what the Germans called it). When reassembleing, the clevis pin can be held in a pair of ViseGrip needle nose pliers with one hand while you negotiate the draw bar and two cables into position.

Pass enger seat out almost a must, unless you like pain.

Milt,

Thanks. I have to take both seats out this winter, so I'll fix the emergency brake at the same time. There isn't much room to work in, so every bit will help... Thanks again!

CHILI, I attemted your method.. but cant get the washers off the shaft, they're partialy in the slot? Tried to see if the stud could be pushed out toward the hand throttle side but it won't budge? What am I doing wrong?

Hmm, mine were on the wrong way the first time I took it out (I've had the whole assembly out at least twice since then). They should come right off. Remove the nuts on both ends of the shaft and remove the metal washers, then the carbon looking washers that helpt it rotate up against the assembly. Maybe your tabs are stuck as if they were forced in. Mine come right out and off. How about a little gentle pry with a flat nose screwdriver? Can you take a pic???

Also, do you have a seat removed? It's MUCH easier to get to and only takes a few minutes to remove and reinstall.
