Spare Tires

Do you guys run spare tires in the trunk of your street cars? Just looking at the "detailed trunk" thread got me to thinking because they didn't have the spares. To be honest I didn't even have a pump up until about 5 months ago, and it's still not even in the car. What good is the spare without it, I don't know.

100's of thousands of miles, and I've only had one flat on the side of a road. Maybe the weight savings is worth the small risk?

Do you guys have them in your car?

I carry that fix a flat crap. I figure it will get me to where I can fix things on my own, and off the side of the road.

Should I have spare in my '68 to better balance a SWB car? What about a LWB?

I have the original 30 year old spare and the pump but have no idea if it will actually hold air? I also carry a can of the fix-a-flat stuff just in case.

I took my spare out a long time ago. I also carry 2 cans of fix a flat. But I also have AAA premium membership. It gives me 100 miles of free towing 3 times a year cause you never know.

Exactly my point. I have it, too. So, I'm thinking about just taking it out. Save weight and some (albeit little) space. However, I run one in the Avalon daily driver because I don't want to have to wait for AAA if I get a flat.

i'm redoing the car, and the trunk and yes i will be carrying a fullsize spare,

if you carry an inflatable crappy one , you can bet you'll have a flat when you're 50 miles from home

if you carry fix-a-flat , you can also bet it's going to be a bigass puncture that will not be fixable

and road side assistance is a must, but i rather have a good spare cause it's so silly to call em for a flat tire

murphy is watching and he's no fun

I carry the spare and pump of course and AAA extra coverage too.
I have had the same thoughts of getting rid of the spare for a few cans of fix a flat stuff.

Has anyone tried that green "slime" that is put into your tires? seems like it would add weight and mess up the inside of the rims.

tried it once

2 cans and a call to the AAA who laughed their ass off at the tire with the green crap coming out of it on the side

the puncture was big, and it was on the inner side so while i was happely pumping it in, it was just as happely coming out where i couldn't see it.

Fix a Flat is really worthless when its cold.

S=Many say that the spare is part of the front design to prevent crumpling in an accident -- never seen anything official on that.

Some of he places where I drive, it would be a hell of a wait to get a tow truck.

Wt. up front is not so bad.

So, I carry the spare.

I have the "space-saver" spare, pump and tools in the trunk, but I'd like to get a full-size spare. I had two flats last summer, but both were too large to fix, the tires had to be replaced.

I carry the spare, pump, jack of course, and tool set, plus replacement bulbs, at least 1 or more bulbs, for every type on the car and a new DME relay.

Only carry a spare on long trips (300+ miles away from home). Otherwise just carry a cel phone. But then again i am one of those "anal weight saving Nazi's" that spares everything (except stereo).
