Parting out with a 911

Theoretical question:

I have a 1983 911 sc cab in pretty good condition.
I could probably get 12/13K if I sold the car.

If I took it all apart and sold the parts separately, how much could I get (time and effort not being an issue)?

Has anyone ever done this?

Look at it this way...

1. Someone writes you a check for $12,000 and the car is gone.

2. A few hundred people ask for the same part over and over again... and you slowly, painfully, creep towards the $10,000 that you hope you will get when the dust settles. Not to mention the hundred trips to UPS, or the countless e-mail, pics, etc... or the months the car sits in your garage in parts.

IMHO, unless the car is crashed, sell it whole.

Engine $4,500
Transmission: $800
Top $1,000
Wheels ???
Fenders $400
Quarter panels $500

the big parts just don't add up.

It's the little stuff that will eventually bring you more money than a complete sale.

Emission is right: you'll spend countless hours dealing with parts shoppers, and some parts (the doors) may never sell. How much is your time worth? How much is your space worth? Ever pack & ship a fender? An engine?

Finally, I think it's bad karma to part out a perfectly good Porsche.
