Eclipse, all the way. I agree with BSiple. I've had Eclipse head units for years, and am hard pressed to think of another audiophile-level quality head unit for that price. http://www.eclipse-web.com/
The GPS unit that plugs into it is badass, too...as is the aux in for my iPod. :) |
becker radio, there's no option
I think the Becker radio fits best in an older Porsche. Timeless, factory look, technical standard.

Kees, where did you get the becker? I agree it looks the best for a P car but the price for the Porsche name is a bit steep.

For those looking for real bargins, look at HMD distirbuting on E Bay. Appears to be close outs of Blaus and others. The blaus they have listed are too much bling for my taste but the price is right.

Another vote for the Blau, it's German, and pretty simple in comparison to many nowdays. I put Blau speakers in a friend of mine's truck, he couldn't break them over three years. I'd have to argue on the Pioneer, I had a DEH-P6300, similar to the one pictured earlier, it was acting up within six months, and I found the menus to be very user unfriendly. I sold it to my little brother for $100. Eclipse is awesome as well, very high quality. I've found Clarion ProAudio and Kenwood Excelon to be good as well, but both have gone waaaay to the dark side styling wise. Try www.soundcity.com, and www.soundcityoutlet.com. Soundcity is cheap, but the outlet is even cheaper.

Here in the Netherlands the price for the Becker-unit is appr. 400 to 500 dollar.

Does anyone know if the Becker will work with an older Pioneed 6 CD changer? It seems the manufacturers all use a proprietary interface between the head end and the Cd changer so when you change one component out, you have to change both of them.

I put in a HK TrafficPro, hich matches the interior very nicely. The color of the radio and the look and feel of the buttons and simple design fit the 911 interior perfectly in my opinion.
Very subtle illumination and the added bonus of GPS navigation in a regular DIN slot. It also has speed-sensitive volume as it is wired to the speedometer anyway, and the 35 watts per channel of RMS power is probably the cleanest sound I have ever had, even with cheap speakers. www.hktrafficpro.com Olivier |
Some of the Blua and Becker units (midrange) look kindof "dated" if you will. I prefer the full DIN look over knobs. I've always been an ALPINE fan, good prices, excellent products. None of the them are ricey or bling. The graphics are minimal and can be turned off in nec. Some uper models have two colors to choose from. I really like the Alpine green glow. Very distinct and not overstated.

3rd on the Eclipse. I've got the bottom of the line unit, and it is subtle and has a knob to control volume. No bling.

the eclipse is nice. the theft protection is an added bonus, but the knob is not quite large enough (i know, i know) as well as the tuner preset buttons.
Nakamichi has 2 cd players, check out the "400" model. The knob is large and it looks rather simple when compared to most of todays players. Tuner preset buttons are big, too. The only drawback is that it has a detachable face. Not sure if it's your thing... www.nakamichi.com |
Dave, the Nak is real sweet, the price seems a bit high at $330 from a web search. Can't tell from the spec's if it plays CDR and CDRW's? I am focusing on the Blau Toranto (colors can be turned off), Becker if I can find a better price, and now the Nak
Thanks Bob |
On eBay now: Porsche CR-210 (AM FM cass) w/ Sony 10-disc changer
Also try a WTB post on the Becker Board, the host (posts as "Horst") or others may have some used Beckers for sale. http://members4.boardhost.com/beckerboard/ Sorry to keep posting in this but I really think the Porsche Beckers are among the least rice looking solutions you can get. They seem to go on eBay for $150-200 when they do show up - not much supply but not much demand either. <img src="http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/cdr210.jpg"> IMO the only unit I'd prefer is the Blau Toronto but those are even harder to find - I tried. |
I was going to get the low end Nak but that was right as they were getting bought out, and there weren't any to be found. So I got another Eclipse (have one in the 4-runner) and like the mellow look.

Worried about a ricer head unit. You are kidding right . . .
Anyway, if you want the best SQ and what I think looks the classiest head unit available, check out my McInotsh MX 406. It actually has analog volume control and probably the only head unit that has this. Dual 20 bit, THD on pre-amp side less than .002., and etc.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1073026100.jpg |
BTW, the ricers usually have the Kenwoods, Pioneers, Sonys and etc. that you get cheap at best buy.
I also have Nakamichi MB 100 and beware of any Nakamichi that contains the muliple disc magazine internally. Be careful with those. They sound nice, but that 6 disc magazine is very sensitive and gets jammed. This requires it to be sent back to the factory. I have had it happen twice on mine. |
John, I am following a Becker CDR 23 on e bay, any idea of this is a US model and if it plays cdr and cdrw's? I sent the seller a PM as well as Host on the Becker board.

I just got one of these for xmas:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1073075967.jpg Very smart and not too much bling! Cheers, Tim. |
