Saw an interesting exhaust system last night
My friend down the street owns an '83 SC, and he just bought himself a wirefeed welder for Christmas. His SC has new SSIs and a two-in-one-out Dansk muffler.
He called me up last night and wanted me to come over and see his new creation. In two days, he welded himself up a new cat/muffler/tailpipe exhaust system that bolts on to the SSIs. It uses what looks like a Dynomax or Flowmaster 10" muffler and a generic cat, and looks like it could be stock. The car is a bit down on top-end power, and is about as quiet as stock. The SSIs are still mounted. He's going to get it tested soon, to check out the emissions level and see if it passes the CA dyno smog test. You can see where he's going with this. I thought it was really a neat system, and well wort the $200 cost, if he gets it to pass the smog check. I'll try to post a few pictures later.

I was thinkig of fabbing something similar as I'm not looking forward to remounting the stock setup if I fail initially.
Do you think he'll rent it out

Pictures would be interesting.
Cars will pass the sniffer test with SSIs and without a cat. And many stations will pass the visual with SSI, simply because they don't know any better. The SSIs look a lot like cat. The fact that they look stock helps the ruse too. I believe that technically your buddie's setup is not legal, since it doesn't use the factory cat. But if it looks stock few stations would catch this either.

I was worried at first that I would have to do something like that to pass emission with my 86 since it has SSI's. But it passed with flying colors. Still it's a good idea, and I bet it would pass 95% of the smog stations visual test.

Chuck,
I hope you are right. I'm going to set the idle CO% back to .8, reconnect the O2 sensor and set the ignition timing back to factory. Hopefully this should do it.

I didn't know the SCs would pass without a cat. I'm not sure I should tell him, after he did all that work!

I called up Summit racing and got a replacement cat for my 79SC. They can sell you one that has the correct cross number to replace your original.
I then took an old bursh system and cut the muffler out and put in the cat in its place. It is a little loud but it flew through emissions here in CO.
