SSI's for 3.6 mod
 
I've just learned that Pelican now offers SSI back dated heat exchangers for the 3.6 mod for our cars. Has anybody here have any experience with them?

PATRICK MOTORSPORTS ALSO HAS THEM. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE AC CONSOLE AND SWITCH TO SINGLE CRANK PULLEY .SWITCHING THE CRANK PULLEY IS'NT A GOOD IDEA IN MY OPINION ,BECAUSE IT'S ALSO A HARMONIC BALANCER, AT LEAST IT DOES ON 95 3.6.

I also just noticed there is a mistake in the online catalog (I think) two left HE's and no right? Are these for 993's and 964's? What are the tube sizes?

How the heck did I miss this? Is this the new, much anticipated 1.75" SSI? Or is it just a regular set of SSI's with reworked flanges? Inquiring minds want to know!

SORRY FOR THE EARLIER CRIPTIC REPLY ROUXZY. THE SSI SYSTEM WILL FIT ,BUT IF Y OU RETAIN THE A.C. BRACKET IT MAKES THE ENGINE ABOUT 2 INCHES LONGER. TO USE THE SSI YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE A.C. CONSOLE ,SWITCH THE CRANK PULLEY TO A SINGLE OR P.M.S. T YPE PULLEY. IF YOU HAVE A 95 UP ENGINE SWITCHING THE PULLEY PROBABLY IS'NT A GOOD IDEA, IT ACTS AS A HARMONIC DAMPNER. THE PROBLEM AS I UNDERSTAND IT IS .THE BANANA STYLE MUFFLER CONTACTS THE A.C. CONSOLE .YOU WOULD HAVE TO BACKDATE THE ENGINE CROSSMEMBER AND MODIFY OR BACKDATE THE FRONT SHEETMETAL. THIS IS INFO TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE GUYS.

It would help if the picture link wasn't the same genaric link for all of the SSI choices. There are many places in the PP catalog where this sort of thing occurs.

If there is a pic link it is useless to have a genaric link and there ought to be more complete information as to the distinct properties of the parts in question. I know that this has stopped me from making a purchase more than once.

100% AGREED. Otherwise why have a picture?? Not being critical here but part of "feeling" good about making online purchases is being able to examine something well enough with pictures and specifications that you have the confidence to buy it without being able to hold it in your hand, IMO.

I am in the middle of this right now. Got Bill's old motor in my car ten days ago, then got a bad cold and have not touched it since.

Was able to hold the SSI's I used on my 3.2 up to the motor and they will not fit!!! Seems that on the the air duct for the heating hits on the back on both units and keeps them from being able to be bolted on the heads.

Was going to look at B&B until I saw this thread. Would really like to know if SSI is making 3.6 versions now!

Joe, they will fit if a hammer is appropriately employed.

I sent you this pic of the SSIs which were removed from that engine a few years ago.

The hammer is gainfully used at the points labled A the flanges at B are just not used(I bent them down so as not present any possibility of a rattle.

You will find that the pipe size is fine for street use but will strangle the engine at higher revs.

Thanks again. I have so many pictures, schematics and such that I could not remember receiving them.

Right now am looking for any RPM and not worried about running out of breath at high speeds!

WHen I was loking into my exhaust I had a long talk with SSI. They were in the process of making a 3.6 SSI, but it is a stock replacement with the front cross over and will retain the cat. SSI had no pplans on making an exhaust that would be used for a 3.6 conversion into an earlier car. Unless they changed their mond, most have found the B&B to work out the best.

If that's the case, they might pair up beautifully with the new Triad muffler for 3.6 HE's.

Still, someone needs to step up and clarify the listing in the Pelican catalog. What, exactly, are they selling?

My question is, with the "old style" of exhaust for the 3.6, would you have to have the "old style" (73 or so) oil line from the motor or the "3.6 style" oil line!

From looking at everything I believe that using the orginal type of exhaust for a 3.6 that it would not work with a "SSI" type of oil line.

If the SSI's are the same as modding the 993 heat exchangers flanges to fit the 964, why spend the extra $750?

By "old style" do you mean 964? If so the 964 exhaust cannot be used at all.

w/ 993style? dunno never attempted that.

B&B and SSI both want the same pre'75 911 oil lines

Still won't fit. I was told the new 3.6 SSI's will only fit the 964 body.

Moses, I agree with you. The orders probably won't flood in until there is a clear understanding of what fittment is being offered.

Not to add more confusion...wait, I guess that's exactly what I'm doing.

I was told several months ago that SSI was working on a set that would work for increased displacement (based on 3.2l case) motors. Similar build but larger pipe diameter. Is this that answer?

Hi folks. It's really not that confusing (at least to me). The 3.6 versions offered are exactly the same as all of the other versions, with the tin modified to fit the 3.6 engines. At least that was what was told to me by the folks at SSI. The picture is the same for all of them, because they all look the same. Frankly, I can't tell them apart just looking at them. The pipe diameters are all the same across all of the heat exchangers - SSI has not increased the pipe diameter (despite calls to do so).

So, the 3.6 heat exchangers are SSIs that are slightly modified to fit the 3.6 engine conversions that are placed in older cars. According to SSI, the whole setup should allow you to use the stock muffler with little or no modifications.
