raising the rear of a 911

Good day and happy New Year to all!
Here is my New Year's resolution... I have to raise my car! I know what you are thinking; who does that! I have just moved to Saskatchewan and it looks like the government here has not been puting much money into its roads so in order to protect my car I need to bring my car back up. I previously lowered the front my self so I know how to work on it but I paid someone to lower the rear. This time around I would like to do it myself. I have looked for articles on this sight but I was only able to find informaiton for the front. Does anyone know where I can find information for raising the back of the car. The car is a 1973 911S and I just want to raise it about 1/2" to 3/4".

Hello. The rear is much more diffivult than the front. From what I know, you have to pretty much take everything back there apart. Then you have to put it all back together evenly on both sides, and get an alignment.

Tell you what, I've got a '70T thats too high in the back. Let's work out something, ok?

You may want to purchase Wayne's book and others out there.

You need to pull off the spring plates, then re-index them on their splines. The trick is determining how many splines to move.

Each end of the tbar has a different number of splines, so by rotating both ends concurrently in opposite directions, you can achieve an adjustment that is finer than a single spline change. Thom fitzpatrick has a calculator on his web site that you may find helpfull for determining the required adjustment.

I recommend that you take this opportunity to upgrade to later adjustable style spring plates. You can get the factory ones from a '76 or later car, or the sway-a-way aftermarket ones. Either choice will make adjustment much, much easier.

Its not really that hard. Nova Scotia roads are about the same. I raised the rear of my '69 the first winter I had it. Be patient, hold your mouth right. It'll come.

OK, that's probably why I paid someone to do it last time. That said I still want to give it a shot myself. Chuck, what is Thom fitzpatrick web site? Does anyone know of an online site I can use to talk me through the process? I hate to say it but what is the name of Wayne's book and where do I get one? The car is driving so well I hate to mess with it but I really need just a 1/2 inch more height. There are no other ways of tweeking the height?

-'101 Projects For Your Porsche 911' (or something close to that)

As far as I know the only other option would be to go larger diameter tires. But that has other problems. Unless you got lucky & find your car already has adjustable springplates (previous owner)

nmcm,

You may also want to post this in the Canada forum, as some of the Sask. people may be able to give you a hand.

Any opinions on the difference between factory and aftermarket adjustable spring plates? Factory take-offs are much cheaper.

Thanks, Matt

Factory are perceived to be of better quality..and if in good shape..can retain the OEM rubber bushings ( or can opt for Neatrix or Chuck's poly-bronze).
If you go with the Weltmeister..the screw adjustment is supposedly easier to work, but you're stuck using plastic bushings, I believe, although this may change ( Chuck Mooreland...did you say you'll be making poly bronze for these too, soon?).

Thanks, I was leaning toward the factory plates, so the info is welcome. What years will fit my '73?

The Canada Forum is located under Europe and just slightly above New Zealand and Australia.

Yeah, but it's only worth a bit over 1/2 of the USA forum...
