Door checks - the final solution.
I've had my car eight years now and ever since I bought it the door checks have flopped around in the doors. I have always had to be careful not to let my doors swing free.
Today I took them out in preparation for some body work and sheetmetal repair. As I was cleaning them up I came to the realization maybe they are not needed or maybe a simple nylon strap would accomplish the same thing. I like the way there's no clunking sound when I open and close my doors now. Any thoughts out there. Has anyone else dumped these buggers? |
I guess it would work, but the factory stops also have a "halfway" stop point, to keep the door from falling all the way open. It's nice in parking lots.
Post some pictures if you decide to try the nylon! Very RSR. :D |
I understand your pain and think it might be a good idea...when i restored mine i put the new original kind back, but i am thinking you could save a few onces evvvvvvvven:) :)

I just had to reweld my drivers door so I could put new ones on. Man those new ones are hard to open/close. I ended up grinding down the middle stop to half it's size to make it easier to open/close the door. Still slows it down but doesn't fell like I'm going to tear it off again.
I do like the idea of nylon though. I seem to remember seeing that in another old car somewhere, can't recall where though. |
I think AC Cobras may have it... maybe Caterham too. Let us know about the mounting points for straps etc.

you could always weld the doors shut and climb in and out through the window. Then you wouldn't even need the nylon...

only if you look like Daisy Duke. Negative points if you have a Y chromosome and wear hotpants. Big negative points.

but seriously, I think.. FD rigs have nice door straps. A call to a dealer in an FD monthly mag wood produce some very cool door straps, IMO. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/fles.gif |

What is an FD rig?

nylon straps have worked great for jeep CJ-5's and up. but i think the real reason for this is to make the doors removable.
and we need to be specific about Daisy duke, we want early daisy, not the one we have today. chances are better that she looks more like cooter. |
