Sad Times in Hermosa Beach.

I just realized why it has felt so weird driving thru Hermosa Beach on PCH lately.

They are demolishing the old Pacific Volkswagen Dealership.

It was where I bought my first p-car.

It was called Vasek Polak in those days. A famous p-car name. I still have the owners' manual cover with his embossed dealership info on it.

A sad day indeed.

Probably not. The keen leadership of most of the beach communities have determined that raising local business taxes will eventually make it possible to sell more condos after the PITA businesses move away.

They are right.

That's true. I drive by it every day and noticed that it was gutted. Of course, drive a couple more miles and you will find the Porsche dealer is in Torrance now. Been there a while now...

I remember Vasek Polak Porsche. My grandpa used to take me down there to see the race cars in the showroom when I was a little kid cause he knew I loved that sort of thing. I also remember somehow being allowed to sit in a 935, dont think that would happen today.

He also bought his (later my dad's and mine) 914 there brand new in 1973 for $3500.

Sad to hear.

Singpilot,

Are you going to be in Vegas on 8/9 Jan? Going to be there. First round of drinks is on me if you are!

Jared! Thanks for the link!

That is the man I remember. As I was finishing the seemingly endless paperwork for the registration and financing, the salesman walked away again (Now what???) I remember him coming back around the corner with 'The Man'. He thanked me genuinely in his heavy accent, and walked me out to my new car. Opened the door, and shook my hand. I saw him many more times over the years, and when I sold that car, I kept the vinyl cover that held the manuals and warranty books. It had his dealership info, and his business card in the clear plastic window.

I keep the manuals and books for my 911SC in it.

He was a real icon in an era of icons.

The PO of my car traveled from Michigan to Calif and had some service work done at Vasek Polak while there. Could've picked a number of dealerships, but he wanted to take it there basically to say the car had been serviced at the world famous dealership. Kinda cool for a car from Mich.

I see at the very bottom on the invoice "found gear tooth from trans when....."

Uh-oh, who has that car now?

Very cool keep-sake!

I love it. N/C for the headlight change. N/C for the trans oil change. Possibly because they found a gear tooth in the oil?

That is great looking at that receipt.

Thanks.

Spent a bit of time there as I grew up in the South Bay. I would go by the BMW store every day on my way to school. We would ride our Sting Rays down to Jacobs and Dewey Webers to check out the Surfboards and over to VP to check out the Racecars.

Gearbox was subsequently repaired according to another receipt - the value of having every single receipt since day one ......

And Steve: if you had a mint condition Sting Ray today, it might make a nice down payment on another Porsche!

I remembered going to the 6-Hour endurance race (aka LA Times GP) in 1979. I saw Vasek's 935s racing. The very next day I was walking home from Mira Costa high school and I came upon his garage off PCH near Longfellow. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw his 3 cars from the previous day. Furthermore, I peeked my head inside the garage and I saw several 917s on the racks! Amazing!!

I just drove by there tonight and what a sad sight, indeed. The windows are covered with plywood and the back is already dug up a bit. I have the POC magazine where Vasek Polak first joined the club. He was quite instrumental in developing the POC race team back in the early 60s.

I have been looking for a Vasek Polak Porsche license plate frame for AGES. I saw one on an old impact-bumper car around here and was having evil little thoughts of stealing it, but there's no way I could live with myself if I did that. If anyone has any leads or one lying around that they don't want, I"ll give ya $20 + shipping for it if it's in structurally good condition (if the paint or lettering is faded, it doesn't matter).
