oil cooler costing- does this sound outrageous??

I e-mailed a Porsche refitting company in the UK-prices in pound sterling (multiply by 1.6 for $) for an oil cooler install on a 71T with 2.7 engine.

dear sir/madam
I currently own a 71 targa which has a custom engine setup. Twin plugged 10:1 comp. 2.7.
The car is still running with original oil tank/system.
Although I am seeing low temps with normal running, I do not want to track it without an oil cooler fitted.
Q) Can you quote for a fender/wheel arch mounted system as per 84-89 Carrea with fan.

A) We would hope to find a good, used system to fit onto your car. Cost for the complete system(sill pipes, thermostat, cooler, fan, mountings etc) might be approx. £600-700 + vat.

Q) I will need a new tank as original is tired- leaks at drain plug bad thread.

A)(£700 + vat)

Q)Can you quote for materials and labor to retro fit this.

A) (Make up various bracketry; plumb 2.2 oil system to later tank and cooler etc) estimate £800-1000 + vat

Sounds a bit steep to me???
any thoughts
Rgds Ben

Not sure about the gas tank, but if they're talking about using the Carerra style (radiator type) cooler that's not a bad price. Price for parts alone for this job would be well above that price for new (approx US$2,000) and a bit below for used (I scraped together used parts for my recent install for about US$700, including all lines, thermostat, cooler, seal, and fan).

Ben,

If the equiv. US$$ range is $1280 - $1600 ... for a used Carrera cooler setup with fan and a used oil tank, I suppose I would accept the estimate, and hope it comes in at the low end. High, yes, but I always do my own work ... so I am not used to doubling everything to include labor for a turn-key installation! It would probably cost $800 - $900 these days for the used parts in the USA.

Thanks Warren, Kevin
I will check out Pelican prices and concider doing the job myself.
I guess it should not be that difficult to do.
I wish I had got it done whilst the car was still in the states as I believe prices are a bit keener here.
Thanks again for the advice
Ben
