Magnecor Wires & Clamps

I'm trying to install my new Magnecor wires. I've drilled out the hold-down clamps so everything fits. The wires just don't seem to line up very well. They're either too long or too short. Does anyone have any pictures of installed Magnecor's?

John

They don't have an exact fit like the OEM's did. I cut the thick cover off the originals to make up the slack under the fan housing holders, I also got some wire spacers/looms in red from Mr Gasket to keep them on the straight an narrow on the sides of the engine.

I drilled out the clamps and they are perfect. The passenger side ones are no problem, it's the drivers side ones that just don't seem to lay well.

I think that the Magnecore wires are a lot more flexable than the OEM's. My OEM wires are still in the same position as when I took them off. The Mag wires seem to flop down easier and lay close to the tin but they are much thicker and better insulated, you don't have to worry about mis-fire or cross firing.

I got my magnecors in the mail yesterday. They are VERY flexible. ie you could probably tie a each one in the nautical knot of your choice & then install them. My SC guides are rubber & don't appear to have any slots in them. The only way to get them off & reuse would be to slit the guides. I'm not sure how successful this would be. I can't find replacement guides of any type in Pelican's catalog. Would be good to get something that looks OEM.

Where did you order them? The 84 has a specific length that is not the same as either 83 OR 85. If you bought them here at pelican they are the wrong ones. You need to get the 84's direct from Magnecor. Perfect fit, EXACTLY the same as stock.

Here's mine...

I installed them on my 86...and just ran them over the fan wheel thingy... there was a bracket there in place that just covered them up and held them down... the bracket was installed by the PO for some crappy Hotwires that he put in there.... even though the Hotwires were crappy...the bracket is very SIMPLE...doesnt require redrilling and works great.

Maybe I will post a pic later....

I did... what a P.I.T.A. But worth it. Has to be done by hand. Too hard to get any tools in there...

Came from Pelican. I noted on my order that there was a descrepancy in the model years listed on the website. I think they'll be ok, but the drivers side could definitely have been a little different length to fit perfect. I was paitently waiting for $1000 worth of parts yesterday from Pelican so I was anxious to get started.

I have an '84 engine and was able to run the 85-89 wires, just not the same way they were run in '84. The only difference is the '84 and '85-89 wires is the length and the cost. The longer length of the '84 wires relates to a different mounting position that was used by the factory. If you are not concerned about the correct factory look of your ignition wires, buy the 85-89 wires and save some money.

Jake,

Actually, mine were basically the same price. The 85-up do work, just have to route differently. I think Porsche decided to run the 85-up wires more direct and not through/under the manifold on the pass side. I wanted to stay with stock so I didn't have to change wire harnesses to make it work out.

Those factory rubber thingies just slip off. Spark plug connectors unscrew and so do the distributor-end connectors. The steel braiding is not necessary. You guys may be trying to "upgrade" from a wire set you're not entirely familiar with. I replaced the wiring, and any connectors that were not in spec, for pennies. Well, not pennies but you know what I mean.
