My left front wheel bearing is shot(nasty noise). I tried to pull the rotor off (with a puller) but it is seized. Has the bad bearing groved the spindle not allowing it to slide off? I've removed the lock nut and washer.
I'm on a road trip from Denver on the way back to Seattle and am stuck in Mt. Home ID. I have a 71T with 89 Carrera front strut assemblies. Any Boise/Mt. Home pelicans that know the best place in Mt. Home for mechanics to pull this rotor off? I was able to get the bearings from an auto parts store here but may need a spindle as well. What would be best parts house in the area to find a spindle? Any replies would be greatly appreciated. I need to be back in Seattle by Tuesday night at the latest. Thanks in advance, Bart |

Bearings usually hold together quite a while after they officially "fail." Though it is not a good sign that the spindle is grooved.
If I needed to get back on the road with a quick fix, I would cut/grind the old bearing off, and slap the new one on. . . it's likely going to take any of those Mnt Home mech's a while to find you a replacement spindle. -Also- You may want to time the Seattle weather, to miss the coming snow.

You said bearings, so you know there is an inner and outer (two). You might be able to temporarily put the new roller sections in between the old races, and get by until you get home.
Island's not kidding about the snow. It may be equivalent to the winter of '96, and we already have over half a foot on the plateau. Good luck.

Just heard from Lee and he knows of a good wrench in Boise. Directed him to this thread to hope he chimes in!

Call Red Jones at Motorsports Northwest in Boise.
Sorry, I can't find his number anywhere but it is in the Boise/Mtn Home phonebook. He is the only certified Porsche mechanic in the state. We was the PCA's member of the year in 96 or 97. Great guy. Damn, I wish I was there to help. What are the chances!!!??? I leave and someone needs help. Figures. Best of luck to you, Lee

try and get a Dremel tool and machine the frozen bearing inner race from the spindle. this may save your spindle.

Thanks for all of the replys. We found a good mechanic in Mt. Home at Jims Auto Clinic. The fellow was a ex-aircraft carrier mechanic for the military. He had to apply the heat to the outer bearing's inner race to get the rotor off. Once off, he cleaned up the spindle good enough to get the new bearings on.
That problem solved enough to get home. Now we're stuck in Troutdale along the Columbia River Gorge. The worse driving conditions I've ever seen. They closed I-84 from Hood River to Troutdale right after we went through. After that experience I was done, so we decided to pack it in for the day. Visibility, maybe 100 feet. When a semi went by, about 10 feet, wind gust to 60 mph with snow, scary stuff, oh yeah all on compact snow and ice. I got to the point where I was trying to keep my distance to the guard rail consistant, so I knew I was still on the road. Wonderful trip we're having here, but at least I'm here, which I began to wonder about earlier today. Thanks again for the replys, Bart |
