Who is right? Pelican or Tweeks?

Pelican says that in general, Bilsteins housings are green, Koni are Red and Boge/Sachs are either black or yellow.

Tweeks says Bilsteins are green, Koni are red or YELLOW and Boge/Sachs were black or gray.

I have yellow...so do I need Koni or Boge? Who is right?

My understanding is the Yellow is a Koni Sport Shock.

The yellow Konis are the "sport" versions and are very stiff. Are the yellow shocks on your car adjustable? If so, then they are probably Konis. I don't think that Boges (even if they are yellow - which I have never seen) are adjustable.

Mine too but the last thing I want to do is order parts, take apart the front suspension and then find out I have the wrong part...

Mike:

Good question and the answer is honestly, I don't know. I have only had the car since August. How can one tell if they are indeed adjustable? It is possible that they are.

The fronts (or at least my red Konis) have a little "blade" that protrudes from the center of the top of the shock. It looks kinda like a stubby flat-tipped screwdriver that sticks up maybe .25". Koni makes a little plastic knob that fits this "blade" and allows you to adjust the damping in the shock by turning it CW or CCW. You could also turn this with a small pair of pliers, though, if the knob isn't handy.

Anyway, if the top of your shocks don't have this little feature (hopefully some close-up pics of Konis somewhere on the web would show this), then I would doubt that they are Konis.

Now, having said this, I am speaking from my knowledge of the red Konis - hopefully the yellows are the same...

Not a great pic, but something from the Koni site:

Mine don't have that feature. They have a slot to fit a screwdriver to hold the strut as you loosen the securing nut. So, non-adjustable something.

Okay, Koni North America says:

Bilstein: Green or YELLOW
Koni: Red or YELLOW
Boge/Sachs: Black or Gray

This is driving me nuts.

Why don't you check the part number on them? That can be cross referenced to determine if they are Koni or Bilstein.

Regards,

Jerry

Bilstein doesn't make inserts do they? Aren't their front shocks complete struts? On my Bilsteins, the part number is stamped on the strut body.

My Bilstein Sports are yellow. The fronts are inserts into Boge [black] strut housings.

Sorry - just realized you're asking about the housings...

My boge struts say 'Boge' on them. That's enough of a clue for me. It's stamped very lightly, so they need to be super clean to read it. I think my Koni struts are stamped as well. (I have Boges on the 914 and Konis on the 911).

Okay, the top of the struts are look like a large bolt with the center bored out and threaded. There is a channel on one side of the "bolt" as well...

Similar to anything you guys have?

Just take 15 minutes, pull a strut and see what you have. Drive the Land Rover till' you get the replacement struts.

Blasphemy...

Easier said than done. I live in an enclosed garage building whose management has a serious problem with people working on their vehicles. But in the end, you are most likely correct that I will just have to pull one.
