How difficult to repair?
I am looking at a 1968 911 L that needs the two pan pieces in front of the trunk replaced. Is this an extremely difficult job? I have restored a 914 and replaced a number of panels on it so I am familar wiht the process.
The rest of the car looks solid. They are asking 4000$ obo, any thoughts if this seems like a worthwhile project? Jeff

If you are just talking about the front half of the suspension pan and the gas tank support it is an easy DIY fix. Parts will run you about $200.00

The price depends on the overall condition of the car presently and how far you want to take the restoration. As a daily driver, you can have a lot of fun in a 911L. How about posting some pictures?

I agree that a fairly accomplished home mechanic can do this with a MIG welder, but I'm planning on this being a 7 on a scale of 10. Just my .02 |

Milt, I meant "easy" in a technical sense. It is very time consuming to do. I did mine with no welding experience after I found out how much it would cost to have someone else do it. My avatar is picture of me standing in the trunk area welding in the new pan.

Thanks I would just be looking at it for a daily driver as for now the 914 will be the autox car. It also needs heter system put back on it so what do you think a fair pricwe would be? I know it is difficult to say with out pics, it could stand to have a paint job but it isn't too bad and the headliner needs put back up.
Is 3000 too much considering it needs heaters and the front suspension pan replaced? Don't know much about the engine yet.

$2,500 sounds better depending on what your PPI reveals about the engine. What about the transmission? Brakes? And are you sure you've seen ALL the rust?
But how much money will you need to spend to get the car where you want it? Another $3K? $5K? $10K? Investing in an early 911 is all about the love for your car because you will very quickly have more $$$ in than you will ever be able to get out on resale. My 911E is an AWESOME daily driver that I've spent WAAAAY too much money on. But I don't plan on selling. In fact, with the rising cost of coffins these days, I'm thinking about buying a double-wide cemetary plot so I can be buried in it. By the way, there was a sweet 911L "Lightweight" someone posted, either here or early911sregistry.org. Good luck!
