Help me with a problem

I purchased a 1980 SC and since I am not much of a motor head, I did not ask a whole lot of questions. Recently someone told me that my engine mnight very well be a 2.7 and not a 3.0.

Can someone give me an oipinion or tell me an easy way to tell other than the fan? Thankshttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1073677061.jpg

looks like a 2.7 to me.

How about the case #? It's located to the right of the fan.

911 106 101 5R is on the fan housing

Looks quite a lot like mine ('77 2.7)

The engine ID numbers you need are to the right of the fan housing ...

Engine serial number is on the vertical support for the fan housing, on a milled surface ... of the form *xxxxxxxx* ...

Engine Type number is on the horizontal milled surface just to the right of the fan support, and will be of the form 911/xx or 930/xx. SC engines have aluminum crankcases and 930/xx series type numbers. 2.7 engines have a magnesium crankcase and 911/xx series type numbers.

Say 930/02

so someone went to a 5blade fan?

jwmc1 01-09-2004 01:25 PM

They must have, I just bought the car 3 months ago from someone I have known for awhile...he got it from an auction

jwmc1 01-09-2004 01:27 PM

The number is on the right on the fan down on the engine...very small print...right?

Ditch that FRAM oil filter though!

jwmc1 01-09-2004 01:40 PM

that was in it when I bought it.... :o)

I know I am probably an embarassment to porsche owners everywhere, but this has been my dream car since I was 14...I am learning as I go...but I appreciate all your help and I am glad my 3.0 is really a 3.0

vash 01-09-2004 09:45 PM

jwmc1, no way you're an embarrassment! i am glad we figured out you had a 3.0. welcome to the club. i am DEFINATELY learning as i go. but that is the friggen best way. get some books, buddy. start with 101 projects for your 911 (it will get your wish list started), and get a CIS injection book ASAP. that stuff is not that hard to understand. CIS is like baking a cake, you gotta follow some basic instructions. you may as well start looking for a new fan :) i always see them here for sale. for the record, i had a fram filter too. i was in the middle of elpaso, tx. not many foreign shops there. haha. it was only on, till i got back to the bay area.

keep the questions coming! and post some pictures of your CAR!

I thought by 1980 all the US imported 911 SC had a/c as standard equiment?

Jim Smolka 01-10-2004 05:36 AM

I second getting rid of the Fram filter ASAP!
Get a good Mahle filter from Pelican.
IMHO, Don't get 'Porsche' filter, not quite what they used to be...

Also, be sure that the plastic hose from the engine to the engine heater fan is seated, otherwise a loss of motor cooling occurs.

I have been messing with the car so things are moved around a bit, the car hasn't been driven for awhile, I live in Michigan, it is 3 degrees this morning....
