You think Porsche parts are expensive? Check this out.

I got my P-car back from my wrench yesterday and we were chatting about the different types of cars he works on. In addition to Porsche's, he also works on Lamborghini's.

He recently put a clutch in a Diablo. Parts cost for clutch assembly - $6,000. And that's parts only, not labor.

A guy was in my store with a shift knob for a 91 Countach (sp?) Anniversary Edition. It was slipping on the shaft so I asked him why he didn't just buy another as opposed to going to all this trouble to fix this one. He told me that Lamborghini wanted $2500 Canadian for a shift knob.... like HELLLLLOOOOOOO

somewhat OT to brawlin's original post, but i remembered this after reading harlequin's post mentioning enzo's oil change price.

the environmental approach of the carrera gt:

"This considered approach to natural resources is reflected in the service intervals: engine oil and air filter every 12,000 miles (20,000 km), oil filter every 24,000 miles (40,000 km) and spark plugs every 24,000 miles (40,000 km) or four years. Most remarkably of all, the original fuel filter and engine coolant never need replacing at all."

Its a Shell Helix synthetic (I don't think Ferrari has had a deal with AGIP in quite some time) that the lucky Enzo owner is required to purchase from the dealer at $60 a quart, as I recall, to keep the warranty intact.

At probably 10-12 quarts, it amounts to $700 or so for an oil change, although wouldn't you think that oil changes would be included on a $650K car?

I had a Cat fall apart in my 91 Range Rover, and it's a Y pipe with a cat on each side. Range Rover wanted $3000 for it! I had to laugh, it's a freakin exhaust pipe and not stainless to boot.

Cut em off.

To replace any Borg/Warner Land/Range Rover component will cost you plenty of $$$$$

I use to work at one of our Helicopter base fire stations. When the mechanics would come up to do the 50 hour maintenance on them, I would always shoot the $hit with them and learn about all the parts. They would tell me how much parts cost, like rotor blades, or a 1700 HP turbine engine, or even the skids. The prices would make me shudder at just the thought.

they only produce 300 cars a year in the Lambo factory
(not counting the cheaper lambo's like the biturbo's)
so technically , any part you need, it custom built

I have a buddy who had a Ferrari dealer totally restore his '71 Daytona. I was afraid to ask the final figure, but I know they waited the longest on the $1500 wooden Nardi steering wheel. He's also having the dealer rebuild the engine on a '67 330. Can't imagine what that's gonna run him.

I guess if you can afford to spend $650,000 on a car, you're not going to worry too much about a $700 oil-change.

To be a little more realistic, I was shocked and amazed at the price on a replacement headlight/turn signal switch for my '86 3.2L. They run about $100 here at Pelican. Then I remembered when I had to have the same job done for a '95 Civic, and being charged in excess of $300 for the part. Porschephiles groan over $500 oil changes and valve adjustments, while our WRX-driving friends don't flinch at $1000 service jobs. I'd say more than anything, we just whine a lot about how expensive our cars are.

The urban legend about why Ferruchio Lamborghini started building cars was that he was insulted by Ferrari and that building competitive V12s was his revenge. Not quite true.

Lamborghini indeed was "insulted," by being unable to get a service appointment when he wanted one for his Ferrari, which needed a new clutch, but he then had his perfectly capable chief mechanic of his tractor factory do the clutch change himself.

The mech came into Lamborghini's office and laid two absolutely identical clutches on Lamborghini's desk. "This is the one for your Ferrari," he said. "$500." (Or whatever the price was in the mid-1960s.) "This is the one we use in our largest tractor. $50." Lamborghini suddenly saw the advantages of value-added manufacturing.

I was told this by Lamborghini's then public-relations director while driving around Sardinia with him in a Diablo several years ago.

Stephan
