Anybody know of a good mechanic/repair shop in Iowa? I have had some experience with the dealer here in Des Moines, mostly for routine maintainance on newer (under warranty) cars. I have heard that a dealer may not be the best place to take care of earlier 911's.
Thanks (still on the steep part of the learning curve) |

There is a good European Car Repair place outside Ames I used to take my VW Bus too. Not too sure on how good he is with Porsche, but he was good when I used him.

There is a place in Ames called "Foreign Auto" or something like that on the corner of Hyland and Lincoln Way - just west of the ISU campus. I have zero experience with the place but have seen older 911s in there from time to time for service.
That should be "Best" Des Moines not "West" Des Moines.

Thanks, I'll check those out. Hey jrdavid68 you sound like you know the territory out here. I grew up out there in Northern Calif.(Sacramento, San Francisco), I think that's where I caught the so-called "chronic Porsche syndrome" that still affects me. Anyways, thanks fot the info

Yes - born and raised in Iowa. Graduated from ISU in '92 and transplanted to the SF Bay Area in Sept of '96. Purchased the '86 Carrera in Oct of '96 - gotta love the Bay Area!
Never looked back, but I do go back a couple/few times a year.

Thanks Gary. I must have gone by there many times as I go to Winterset quite often. I'm trying to do a little footwork before I take the plunge into the never-ending-as far- as- I -can-tell world of 911 hot rodding.

jrdavid,
Most of my family has roots back in Iowa somehow. My wife was born and raised in Ames, Mom in Forest City and grandfatehr from Cherokee. I graduated from ISU in 96 and have moved on as well. Due to the inlaws I still get back pretty often. Bought my first air colled vehicle there 78 VW Bus (great college vehicle) and got addicted then... Bill |
