'69 911S oil flow and thermostat
Im getting ready to install the new Elephant oil cooler into my '69 911S. I am going to be using the stock hard lines installed at the factory that run up through the rocker panel.
The car did come new with an oil cooler, but who knows how many years it has been since it was removed. The oil lines have some tape over the ends, but Im not sure that was done when the cooler was installed. Im concerned there could be dirt/grit/crud in the old oil lines. I would hate to hook everything up and then have the engine be destroyed by oil contaminants from the oil lines the first time I run it. On my car, and on all '69 to '71 911S cars the factory oil cooler setup had the oil thermostat integral with the oil filter console inside the engine bay. I have purchased one of these consoles complete with oil thermostat and lines and I am going to install it. I cannot tell what direction the oil actually flows through all this stuff. IF the oil flows from the tank to the oil thermostat, trough the oil lines to the front cooler, back to the thermostat housing, THEN through the oil filter and then back to the oil tank.... then I dont really have any worries. The oil will be filtered AFTER it has circulted to the front cooler and any trash found in the oil lines will be filtered out. If however the oil goes through the filter and THEN hits the thermostat and travels to the front cooler, the oil returning from the cooler through the old lines will not be filtered before it circulates back trough the engine and I am at risk. Anyone know how this thermostat works and whether or not the oil is filtered before or after it goes to and through the front cooler on these early "S" cars? I have though about trying to flush the lines out and ensure there are no contaminants, but I have not come up with any really fool proof way. Thanks for the help! Terry |

I can't help you with your oil flow direction, but one thing to consider is that cold, thick oil doesn't get filtered. At startup it's too thick to be pushed through the filter material, so the bypass valve within the filter opens.
I'm sure someone here knows a good way to flush out the lines. -Rob 1980sc |

Terry...I have a 69S as well....the oil flow is from the tank to the pump (lowest line from the tank)...through the engine (gets hot)...back to the scavenge side of the pump....to the filter....out of the filter to the oil thermostat...then back to the tank OR up to the oil cooler...and then back to the tank.
Now....this is/should be the direction of flow....however...that big lump of aluminum at the filter has a bunch of passages in it. I have not checked all of the holes yet to see the "actual" flow pattern. But I think that Porsche is pretty smart and they use the proper flow pattern. You have to filter oil when it's hot....then cool it...then put it back in the tank. BTW...I will be getting rid of all the tank mounted stuff when I do mine....I'm going for an external filter (mounted where the normal engine oil cooler is)....and an external bypass thermostat with a big cooler up front. This should clean up the engine compartment somewhat..and make it more efficient. Bob

I am going to be putting all the 911 oil tank, filter, fender mount cooling in my '69 912. Can you send me some pictures of this stuff as I need to understand it also. This is a good discussion that I was going initiate at a later date. If you want to get rid of any of you old oil system stuff, let me know.
