Trans rebuild - made a call today...
to a well-known Porsche transmission rebuilder back east. What an absolutely crappy exerience it was.
Asked about installing a WEVO internal kit at time of his rebuild. Said he thinks the WEVO internal kits were for people "who don't know how to shift" Installed one when he "didn't want to and the customer had me take it out the next week" OK, so perhaps he has something here and that was his experience with WEVO (but probably not), so... After a *few minutes*, he mentioned he didn't have time to discuss things and he had work to do - this was after I had asked ONLY about boxing, shipping ($200), and the general parts ($800 to $900)/labor ($600) price, and the simple WEVO 'do you like them' question. Kee in mind, these were ALL what I would call work related questions - items that he would make money from. Needless to say, I WILL NOT go with this clown mit attitude. 2 cents, buyer beware. What an absolutely RUDE person. Craig |
what a dick.

If that's who I think it was then all I can say is he can be moody. That's no excuse - he lost a sale. Good for you, you don't deserve to be treated that way. Move on.

Hmm, I guess I better get started on that tranny rebuild book...

I had very good experience with Vertex rebuilt boxes.
Having said that, the next time the 915 breaks, I am doing it myself. |
Back east covers a whole lot of real estate,
Ive heard good things about vertex also. |
I guess you aren't going to name names? I can't blame you for that, but i live "back east" and am going to be in the market for a rebuild this year. I'd like to know who not to call for a quote.
The only person i have talked to so far is Hayden at WEVO. If you look up the term "class act" in Websters, there must be a picture of Hayden. He emailed me color graphs of possible gear changes we dicussed even after i said it might be late this year before i can swing it. The price did not sound out of line especially considering the quality of work that they do. Paul |
try Lonehill.net, here in Northern CA, I know Stover well, infact I was over at his house this weekend rebuilding my trani and swapping gears.
Sorry I guess his website is down, stover@lonehill.net is the email Jim |
I wouldn't even think twice about anybody to touch any 915 other than Hayden at Wevo. Talk about a guy that knows his ****. I have personally seen him stop by guys place at 10:30 p.m. two days before a race to help out in the installation of some of his products. He is also present at the race track and knows every little aspect of the trannies...he is an expert engineer on this stuff. The best part is that he does not like surpirises and makes sure that everything is in top notch shape before giving it back to the customer.

Wouldn't John Walker be closer?

do it yourself. i'm sure we can walk you thru it. everybody else on the board who tried it enjoyed the experience. it's not that hard.

These guys did my 915 a year ago. Of course they're about 10 minutes from my house and I know half the guys.

Consider yourself very lucky that he was rude to you *before* you handed him your car! Run away. |
I would have to agree on Hayden, if you are putting in the Wevo stuff, why not have the best do the rebuild, if you are just replacing the bits and pieces, and you are up to it, do it yourself. If in doubt, have a local P-shop do the pressing on and off of the gears.
But for the Wevo kit, I would send it to Wevo, it is one thing to take something apart and put it back, it is another to take something apart and put it together with now and quite different parts. jim |
JW,
Just when I think a job may be out of my league, you always seem to put the bug in my ear that maybe I can do it myself...now the transmission. I've always looked at transmissions as casing full of black magic seems...something not to be breeched by mere mortals. Seriously, thanks for the "can do" attitude and spirit. It's encouragement from professionals like yourself that make this board tick, and keeps these wonderful cars on the road. I know for a fact that if I had to run to the dealer for every little thing, I could not afford to drive my SC. Just thought I'd let you know that having true professionals in the virtual corner is reassuring to say the least... R/ Dustin |

Forum help will get you a long way on both counts. With good work practices, good decisions and methodical care, there's no reason why the home mechanic can not rebuild their 915 as well as any reputable shop. Regards Hayden |

Wayne, can I get on the pre-order list ;) My synchro for 1st is pretty worn out. I've done everything else (engine rebuild and 49 of the 101 projects so far.) But I would love to tear into the 915 to see what makes it tick! Pat |

So how much does it cost to rebuild one for the home mechanic on a 915 with a bad 1st and 2nd syncro? |
JW did a great job on my trans. Took him a day and a half. I love this pic.
