Smoking after chip install
 

Just had a SW chip installed by a good Porsche shop. Drove the car the 15 minutes home and noticed a lot of blue/grey smoke at every red light. The smoke seemed to clear up after 5 minutes of driving but the smell lingered on. The car did not smoke at any time before the chip replacement. Could the fuel mixture have been dramatically changed? Nothing else was touched at the shop.
The car seems smoother, but it also seems to have less acceleration. Car is an 85 3.2.

Hi Larry, that is not normal, and smoking is not something that typically happens, but it could also be initially from carbon buildup as bell describes. Something prior may have been misadjusted causing the car to now run very rich, which would reduce your acceleration. This same program has been in use by many owners for quite a while now. I think that brings up an interesting point...I assume that chips assume a certain level of tune and conditions in the car. If things are a bit whack, the results could be unexpected.

Steve At 85500 miles I just assumed with my frequent runs to 6599rpm I might have exposed the Carrera valve guide weakness
because mine now has the same smokeing at idel and reveing the motor. Could I have got too much fuel and washed down the guides or rings?

Keith, My valve guides were toast at 70,000, after I removed the cat, the smoke really became noticable. I knew it was time for a rebuild when some kid in a beat up Acura Integra asked me if my car was on fire.

Keith, at idle your car shouldn't smoke bacause the fuel mixture has not been changed at idle. But depending on the smoke when you rev it hard, a puff of smoke right before a hard shift near redline may an indication of worn valve guides. The chip is programmed to provide additional fuel enrichment under hard acceleration conditions, however if the O2 sensor is also weak or failing, it can also create a rich condition under such situations too. See if you can figure if it's fuel or oil, and we'll go from there.

Larry, in your previous post you said that you were going to do the install yourself, what happened?

The shop may have installed it wrong, flodded the car trying to start it and not given it enough time to clear up after putting it in correctly.

Did the shop disconnect the infamous CA Brown Wires?

If so, try reconnecting them and see if the smoke goes away. I think I had a similiar problem and reconnecting the wires helped.

You can check and reconnect the cables on your own, very easily.

Thanks to all that replied. I drove the car 30 miles today, mostly freeway and the smoking is going away. I believe a gunk/carbon build-up was responsible for the smoking. The car is much smoother thru the gear and pulls strong thru 6000 rpm. It used to surge slightly @ 3000 rpm but the Steve Wong chip has corrected that problem too. I am very pleased with the chip and the improvement it has made in my 85 3.2.
I want to mention that Steve Wong has emailed me with a lot of advice and offers to help in any way he could. I am very pleased to do business with Steve and would recommend his product to anyone wanting an improvement in their P car's performance.

My car was originally purchased in Florida and did not have the "brown wire".

I found a new P mechanic and wanted to check the quality of his work. I had him adjust the clutch as well as install the chip. The combination truly makes my car a pleasure to drive!
