More info on the supposed 1968 "Race Car"
I looked at the car in the daylight today. No plexiglass, no fiberglass with the exception of the rear bumper ends. The VIN decodes as a 1968 911 "S" US Karmann (11835711) Unsharzlack 68-6806-(either 6 or 0) It has the gold emblems on the back including the sportomatic but no "S" designation.
The motor has what looks like six Webers with 401(D or 0)AP3C ands then 2091 underneath that. I could not find a motor number, only casting numbers. 901 101 102 1R on the lower crank case 901 105 111 0R on the side of the motor or head and the fan case. It has a "Sydmur Fyreball" capacitor, widened steel wheels, racing exhaust and suspension mods. and the places where a roll bar used to be behind the seats. So, is the car what I expect it to be, somebody's idea of a modified car? |

Sounds like a '68S thats been modded for racing. Not by the factory though.
I believe that the S was never imported into the US that year due to emmissions regs. |

The motor number is easy to find.
Looking at the fan there is a vertical rib that is next to the lower opening for the fan shroud strap. If you look from the right side the engine type will be stamped in this vertical rib. If you follow the rib down to the case and then look down onto a flat section between the chain housing cover and the upturn in the case the engine number will be stamped. So... Engine type is on vertical rib. Engine number is on flat section of case looking down.
