OEM vs aftermarket windscreen

I have decided to replace my heavly pitted windscreen. Got a quote from local auto glass place of $510 (with antenna) for aftermarket. OEM a lot more (around $800, I think). I recall seeing some assertions on this BB that aftermarket windscreens are more likely to have visual distortions. Auto glass salesperson says no, because they are made by the same process, and often by same companies. Anyhow, she says, if your windscreen has distortions we would replace it for you.
Anyone have good or bad experiences with aftermarket windscreens?

I had a after market one with all little bubles in it, which I had to change for a genuine Porsche one. Luckly the insurance company paid for it as it was $1150 AU.

I paid about 300.00 for a Sigla winshield a few years back and installed it myself. I think Sigla is an OEM supplier to Porsche. It pays to shop around for glass.

The parts mgr at Barrier Porsche told me that they no longer carried oem windshields as they could not compete with aftermarket. I had a sigla windshield with the imbedded antenna installed locally for $560. I like the wider tint band.

Cool

I haven't confirmed the info, but
I was told that Sigla and Sekurit was bought by the company that has the 3 letter name that starts with F_ _. I believe the F is for Ford.

I looked at both aftermarket and Porsche (OEM dealer item windshields), big difference. When I spoke to my wrench he assured me that the OEM would fit better and was of better quality. Installation cost was the same for both. My comprehensive insurance picked up the cost of the glass, so it did'nt matter which he installed, he made the same money.

I believe in OEM / stock parts, but that's only cause I'm extemely anal.

I got a no-name brand for $300 or there abouts. It's fine. Fits fine. I can see the road through it quite well. Keeps the wind and rain off too. I did make sure to use a REAL Porsche gasket though. The repro gaskets are not a place to save money.

Look at the glass before it's installed and if it's free of flaws and bubbles I am sure you'll be happy to spend the savings on other cool stuff for your car.

I used a PPG when I redid my car. The first one they installed did have a distortion and was replaced. Once that was taken care of I've been happy with the quality. I went with aftermarket because as easily as our glass gets chipped and whith the amount of miles I drive in construction zones I felt like I was going to replace it again down the road anyway. So in my case, why waste a good original piece?
