who is going to Barrett Jackson? 22 Porsches

Anyone else going to the big Barrett Jackson auction?

22 Porsches are scheduled for auction, here is the list.

I was there last year, but there were only a couple of P-cars. Nothing special. Lots of cool American iron. Fun place to hang out for a day.

Sorry, not going, but I did notice this. It's lot # 614

NUMBER 121, 4 CYLINDER VW TYPE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, FRESH REBUILT 2165 CC 150 HORSEPOWER WITH NEW ALUMINUM CASE, ALL PERFORMANCE PARTS, TUBE FRAME, FIBERGLASS BODY, DUAL DELLORTO CARBS, PORSCHE 356 B ALUMINUM DRUM BRAKES, VDO CORRECT GAUGES, WOOD STEERING WHEEL, SILVER-BLUE PAINT, RED INTERIOR, 1300LB. VERY FAST, AUTHENTIC LOOKING 550. REGISTERED AS A 1955 PORSCHE IN CALIFORNIA, VANITY PLATE.

How do you register a kit car as a 1955 model? I thought it would be whatever year it was created.

I'm there. I grew up 1/2 block away from Barrett. Rode my bike by his house (compound) almost every day. YOu should have seen the trucks rolling into his place just before the auction every year. He even let me come "look" at some of these cars. It's actually where I learned how to say Pininfarina correctly.

Can't Wait!

i'm also going. i get in thursday afternoon and leave sunday morning. i've been going since '00 when i bought my '89 speedster. i often say that Barrett-Jackson is to car lovers what Mecca is to Muslims. everyone should make the trek at least once in their lifetime.

I'll be there Sunday, which is my one day only break between the PT Cruiser convertible intro and the Meguiar's Collector Car Person of the Year Judging. Will have to miss Saturday.

Whoa, I would love to get my hands on that 77 RSR clone. What do you think it would go for?

Kit cars are generally registered as the year they recreate, at least in CA. Don't ask me how that's possible but every stinking speedster or spyder kit car I look at is registered as a 50 something. Same for a T bucket kit or your run off the mill 37 ford hot rod. All registered as the year they try to recreate.

This is a great thing, if you are into that kind of thing. If you'd imagine that it would have to pass 2004 emission standards, the rod and kit car industry would be dead and so would be the hobby. I think that's also the answer why there is this rule. A whole industry would go south. And those few cars produced aren't driven 100 mile commutes daily either, so they won't make up much pollution.

Cheers, George

Interesting. I didn't know that. Yea, I guess you're right, it wouldn't work. Sure makes the Spyder and Speedster kits more attractive!

Nothing wrong with the porsche kit cars, except that there is too much VW in them.

Talking about kit cars. There is a guy I met at Laguna Seca. He bought a turbo charged spyder (vw engine) kit car. Makes close to 200hp. He looked like he had fun despite having to fix a few bugs. All hell brakes loose if you take someon elses trailer queen and start racing it.

At the local toy store, I have seen a kit car speedster with a flat six and race prepped. It was around 30k. Looked like a LOT of fun!

Don-
That car was discussed in this previous thread. General consensus there was that $45K would be a good price. Could go higher, it all depends....

TT
ps- my kit car registered this last year in CA under SB100 rules is only a 1957 Lotus for smog purposes. The DMV put year 2003 on the registration as that was when it was first presented for licensing.
