I'll comment on your "hard start" problem since my car takes quite a few turns to start... You really should disconnect the lines and fittings that make up your "cold start" priming system. I just took mine apart yesterday. Each cylinder has a tiny plastic fitting with a pinhole sized opening that is prone to clogging. I used Chemtool on each fitting and then blew through each fitting to make sure that liquid could travel though. I haven't put everything back together yet, but I can tell you that my fittings were plugged and a lot of tiny particles were sitting in the pool of Chemtool that I used to clean the fittings. I'll repost when I get everything back together and let you know if cleaning helped at all. Another thing you want to do is to may sure that your solenoid is actually squirting fuel. The simplest way to do this is to disconnect your cold start system fuel line, connect a piece of fuel line to the solenoid, run the fuel line into a bowl, and then have a friend try to crank the engine a few times. If you see fuel, the solenoid is working; if not, it isn't. Or, you can remove the solenoid, apply a 12 volt power source, and watch it move. Bill |
I tried starting my car after getting the pre start system cleaned out. Sad to say, but I didn't notice a big difference in how quickly the car started.
I guess it is possible that next time the car will start easier, since the pre start fuel line will have some fuel in them? Don't know. I'll repost next time I take the car out. Bill |

Is your Permatune box blue anodized, or aluminum-clear-anodized? The late-model aluminum colored ones are potted in epoxy, and a bit difficult to troubleshoot ... The early blue Permatunes are readily accessible since they aren't potted, and can be repaired a bit easier than Bosch CDIs. I suppose the potting compound in later boxes could be dissolved with an aircraft-grade chemical paint stripper, but I haven't tried ... |
Warren, the permatune was silver. I pulled the 3 pin bosch from my '73 parts pile and had it installed in place of the permatune. Once the points and the dwell were set things got much better. I dont think I will need the Bosch CD box in the '73 becuase the engine I have for that car is already setup to plug into a 6 pin box.
I was actually able to drive the '72 to work today. What a hoot. Thanks again for all the help guys. I learned enough from this thread to know that I probably will be able to handle something like this on my own next time. |
