i need a plan. oil leak

my car runs great. but i have a friggen oil leak. no surprise, but i think the majority is coming from the stud near the intermediate shaft for the oil pump. to dark right now for positive confirmation. but i know the stud is loose, i started to tighten it before, but i chickened out when i felt it click. i know my 2.7 is prone to this. should i back it out a bit to get some sorta sealent in there for more drive time before i gotta drop the motor and take it apart? the block is wet with oil there, so the other alt for a leak would be a cylinder right? the oil return tube looks sound. i really dont mind tearing the motor apart. (except the $$) my main goal for messing with the CIS was to get it running so i can be confident the fuel injection system would start a new motor. the leak doesnt look that bad on my garage floor, but i bet the main leaking is with the motor running. whatchathink? i have read wayne's rebuild book multiple times, so maybe i am ready.
maybe my house doesnt need dual pane windows..ha!

Can you post a pic Cliff? I read your post a few times but I just can't picture the exact spot you're talking about.

How sure are you that it is not coming from the top of the motor via the pressure switch or vent, etc?

I'm not sure I understand what stud you're looking at. One alternative might be to install a sealing nut, or an ordinary nut with sealant under it. This does not sound like the kind of thing I'd disassemble a motor to fix, unless I was just itchin' to rebuild the motor with all its "while I'm in there" danger.

You need to get rid of the spaces and brackets in the filename.

In hunting down leaks, I got some oil dye from Kragen (about $17 for four doses), ran the car a good bit, then looked at it in the dark with a hand-held fluorescent lamp (the kind they use for checking hand stamps at night clubs, etc. AKA blacklight). I bought it from a smoke shop ('70's store) for $14. It showed up as a concentration of bright, dense yellow at the leaking points.

Can help minimize the guess work.

Damn that stud is pretty easy to get to with a paper towel. If it was me, if it is only weeping oil, I would just wipe it off every day or so and not worry about it.

That oil dye is an excellent idea. I've never thought of that. I'll have to remember that one.

If it is weeping from the case line, would something like JB Weld stop it?

Per the manufacturer's description (you'll see in the box), the dye does not compromise the oil at all. Also works in the transmission and a couple other systems.

The black lights are also available at lighting stores...in case you're allergic to incents or tye dye Sound groovy?
