tear drop mirror conversion

After getting bored with the power window mirror only working in two directions on my '78SC conversion to teardrop mirrors I bought a BW Motorsports relay which is supposed to get the mirror to work in the prefereed 4 directions. After following the instructions and reading wiring diagrams I am still no nearer to solving this issue. Has anyone sucessfully got their teardrop power mirror to work properly with or without an extra relay?
One other thing I wanted to check was the switch wiring ie whichwires go to which terminal? If any one has their mirror switch visible at the moment could you describe the wiring connections.

Bones, the issue may be the fact that you car is right hand drive and Euro(?). The wiring seems to be different from US spec cars.

Bones 01-15-2004 07:31 AM

Yeh Rick I've thought along those lines too but I've tried lots of combinations , surely that would overcome a left and right haned relay?

RickM 01-15-2004 07:35 AM

This is a toughie. If anyone has the Euro and/or US wiring schematic that would make life easier. Did you also try direct wiring?

Bones 01-15-2004 07:43 AM

I just spoke to Brad at BW and he says there is no physical difference between the relays left to right , you just need to swap two wires over, what do you mean by direct wiring exactly?

RickM 01-15-2004 07:46 AM

Yes, the relays have two wires reversed. Did you try to wire without use of the relays?

Moses 01-15-2004 07:47 AM

Adjust them once and don't let anyone else drive the car. Ever.

RickM 01-15-2004 07:50 AM

That's what the manual units are for. Would be ashamed to lose that capability.

RickM 01-15-2004 07:51 AM

BTW Bones, what happens when you hook up the modules? Any movement?

Bones 01-15-2004 08:33 AM

I can get movement in all 4 positions of the switch but the motors will only move in one direction and not come back in the other, the relay clicks like it should.

Performance Products also offer a mirror module. Is it the same brand that BW motorsport offer? Is there a mirror module better than the other?

Bones 01-15-2004 09:15 AM

Couldn't say I've only seen one type. It only cost $40.00

RickM 01-15-2004 09:45 AM

It's the same module.

C2later 01-15-2004 09:55 AM

These modules,do they fit in the mirror housing? Do they come with new connector pins?

Bones 01-15-2004 11:11 AM

You'll need some soldering skills to put in th BW relay. They come with the connector fitted but I had to cut it off and fit my own as the connector was a different type in my mirror. The relay is small and fits tidily in the deepest recess of the mirror next to the mounting and swivel point.

Double bump: Here's the module/harness I make....pretty much same as the others....

So what wiring pattern do you have connected to your switch Rick that's what I need to know.

Bones 01-16-2004 09:22 AM

I persevered and now I have a fully functioning 993 teardrop on my '78SC with the BW Motorsports relay doing a fine job. The job required a little rethinking of the wiring plan and the heated element in the mirror glass has to be disconnected at least on my car (don't need it anyway) for the mirror to work. If anyone has a similar problem you know who to contact.
