993 Aero mirrors

I've attached my Aero mirrors and they look FANTASTIC! I was just wondering if anyone knew why they aren't identical (one hugs the door more than the other)

Here are some pics:

Adam,

911 mirrors are "staggered". The drivers side is designed to be closer to driver than the passenger side. Or vice versa - can't remember.

If you mount the passenger side in the same forward position as the drivers side you will not be able to see it. I have seen some who have made the mistake. My friend has a 67 "S" purchased with the passenger mirror in the forward position (Same spot as drivers) and it is useless there. Now he neds to have the door welded up.

How timely!

I've been considering doing this on my '89.

Do you have a picture taken from directly behind or directly in front of your car? I'm curious how pronounced is the unmistakeable Porsche teardrop shape.

So far, these are the two most expensive item's I've purchased for my car to date. I bought both items from another pelican but I think I'm going to be able to trade the door handles (968) for a pair of 993 ones at a local porsche yard.

The handles I have learned are VERY difficult to come by but if anyone needs a set I can get them from Porsche brand new for about $450 locks and all.

I have seen them used for anywhere between $125 and $300 but have never gotten a chance to purchase. Heck, even the ones I found are two different colors and missing pieces.

As for wiring them up, I don't plan on making them electric to keep my doors clean. IF anyone has the manual type and is interested in trading I'd be game for it as it'll be a bit before I paint these babies. All the wiring is in tact.

Adam

Bones, have you tried using a test light to see what colored coded wire is getting juice when you move your joystick? This should be checked after the module and before the mirror motor. Hopefully,you should get four seperate signals. One for each direction of the switch! If you havn't yet, take a test jumper lead or wire hooked up to your battery and touch each lead to your mirror to see what color wire moves what? Make sure the system is grounded! Document your findings on paper. It will give you some hope if it's still screwed up.

Nice job Adam! IMO The tear drops look much better than the flag style mirrors.

Bones, what was the main cause of your problem? Im going to do the same conversion and would like to know the main thing to watch for? Also, what about the passenger side?

I had a number of simultaneous problems which wouldn't affect everyone I'm sure , as follows:-
1. The switch was connected up incorrectly, this caused the switch to work on one side only.
2. at the relay the colour of the wires were supposed to match in my case they had to be switched completely from the plan and commonsense ie
blue=white
white=blue
black=brown
brown=black
3. The wires which form a current to de-fog the mirror glass had to be completely removed as when they were connected a current seemed to return to the luggage compartment mounted relay and cause the switch to operate in one plane but from four switch positions.
It took a lot of patience and trial and error to solve. Just as an experiment and when I was sure of the connections I tried to get the mirror to work without the relay it wouldn't work in two planes, only one so the relay splits the current to the two seperate mirror motors.
I don't have two powered mirrors so you will need two relays for that set up. I would say go for it but be prepared to experiment if things don't go according to plan.
