The Dreaded While You're In There Thread

Ok, since it appears I have to drop my engine to fix my clutch release fork, what should I do while I'm in there? I'm almost afraid what answers I'll get. Invalid answers include: 3.6, new P&Cs, or pretty much anything that cost much at all. Stuff like gaskets that commonly leak, stuff to check, clean, etc. Also, do I need any new hardware or gaskets for re-assembly? At least this will be a good opportunity to fix all my oil leaks. Thanks, Matt

Oh yeah, it's a 70T, stock, with Webers.

For about $90, you could upgrade your Clutch Pin and Clutch Fork Ball Pin. Apparently, these were a bit of a weak spot in the 70/71 clutch setup and you can replace them with stronger components while you are in there. I know a competitor sells them so I suspect that Pelican would as well.

Andrew M

Oh - and check your brake / fuel lines for corrosion. It's free and easy (kind of like my ex)

Solid engine mounts. $100 max.

Can your engine use Carrera chain tensioners? I don't know the 2.2 all that well.

Adjust the valves. ;)

Clean everything, especially any cooling fins you can get to!

i think the heater flapper boxes are easy with the engine out. what about your rear shocks. well the flappers are cheap. $30 used?

vash 01-16-2004 09:44 PM

oh yea, while the motor is out, you can go ahead and fixed that door :)

good luck friend.

Just about everything in the back of the car is easier w/ the engine out. Good time for suspension if it needs it. CV joints, clutch cable, throttle bushings/rod(?), engine sound pad, wiring maintenance, deck shocks, breather hoses, vacuum hoses; you name it. Do everything you can afford by order of how easy it is to get to with/without the engine in.

Hey that's a great idea. Coincidentaly I have a set for sale for $50 (paid $90 used for 100 miles or so). Too much vibration for my tastes...I went with club sport mounts.

Replace the sound blanket if needed.

Thanks for the responses guys, keep them coming. It's funny you should say that Andrew, seeing how the clutch release fork pivot bolt is the reason I have to pull the engine in the first place. I already have the carrera tensioners. unfixed, the door was Friday's project before this happened, of course it's still not here yet, FedEx is taking their sweet time. So that's easier with the engine out, huh? I have to figure all this stuff out ahead of time so I can order with Pelican this weekend, there probably isn't a store that stocks Porsche parts within 200 mi. of me. What are the most common oil leaks that you can only get to with the engine out, I'll just order all the gaskets and do them all.

Detail engine bay, check for rust, upgrade suspension bushings, install bigger torsion bars, adjustable spring plates, brake lines, shift bushings, oil lines for external front mount cooler......

Jim Richards 01-17-2004 06:56 AM

replace oil breather gasket, oil thermostat o-ring, oil pressure switch, engine oil cooler seals, and maybe replace your pulley seal (rear main seal), and the flywheel seal (front main seal - requires pulling the flywheel so you'll need to replace the one time use only flywheel bolts)

if you don't know how old your clutch is, better think about a new clutch kit.
