Upper strut/spherical plate fitment ?

I bought a set of upper strut plates from Kevin at Kanna racing (great guy) no problems there, and noticed that my struts which are Bilstein from my '77 are slightly larger in diameter on the shoulder not the threaded end where it fits up thru the spherical bearing on the camber plates. Will it cause a problem to mill these down slightly to fit thru without weakening the strut integrity? Dumb question perhaps, anybody else experience this? Any solutions? Thanks.
