Frequently, my 915 shifting is balky when going from 1st to 2nd. What happens (after pausing in neutral) is that the lever will move almost all the way into 2nd and then 'hang up'. If I really pull on the shifter it will go in, but mostly I move it into neutral and back to 2nd - producing a perfect shift (smooth action and no grinding). It seems worse when cold, but will do it at any temperature.
The 915 was rebuilt by the PO and I never have any syncro grinding. Very occaisionally (2x/month), the shifter will be very difficult to get out of 3rd gear as I roll to a stop light. It has that same 'hung up' feeling - except worse. Does this sound like a problem with the shift linkage??

Join the club. Mine does the same thing. This subject has had many discussions on the web page. Try search for more useless solutions.

The wonderful world of the 915. You may need to hesitate and let second "do it's thing". This "notch" is why it's tough to do a real 0-60 in the later 911's. I think they ALL do it to one degree or another. You can go thru all the steps, shifter bushings... shift linkage replacement/adjustment bla, bla, bla, bla. But you'll still have it to some degree. On thing that I did when I first bought my car was change out the gear box oil to SWEPCO. It did make a difference. Learning to shift the 915 well and clean is one of the wonderful things that make the 911 a 911...

The first thing I would do is to take the shift coupler cover off and check the bushings. If they are fine with no slop, I would then adjust the shift coupler. Took me 3 or 4 attempts, but I finally got it right, and the results were worth the effort.
