OK, what do I have?
I have been searching this site, Rennlist and the web in general trying to identify which type of engine I have on hand here. It is presumably from a 75 911, not sure of S vs. whatever. I had hoped to find a good engine number decoder but no luck.
The engine case number is 901 101 102 7R; the number on the vertical bracket by the fan is 6550891. Is this a standard engine, S engine, or something else entirely? It needs heat exchangers; will exchangers off of a 3.0L engine fit without mods? Thank you, JS

On a horizontal milled rib to the right of the serial number and slightly forward ... you will find the entine 'Type Number' stamped, in the form 911/xx ... you may have to rub off the dirt/dust/crud buildup.
The Type Number will tell you what engine you have.

Joe, this is odd. You happen to know the engine type, it's stamped on a horizontal surface near (to the right of?) the serial number.
If your serial # started of as 645... and it was a type 911/43, then it would be out of a US 911S or Carrera. That is the most likely case. But I haven't found any serial number starting with 655... aaah, Warren beat me to it!

OK, the engine type is 911/44. Should it be 911/43 for a US engine? What is it?
BTW I can verify the engine serial number is as previously posted. Can't find mention of this anywhere thus far, but will be buying some reference books soon...curiosity is killing me...

Type 911/44 is a California only 911S or Carrera engine. 160 HP @5800 rpm, 162 ft-lbs torque @ 4000 rpm, air pump, thermal reactors, and EGR emissions control.
