Painting calipers

Hello,

I plan to paint my black calipers red, but how difficult is it, do I have to take them to pieces and what kind of color, so it will stick for a couple of years. The car is (will be) driven on the track.

Not sure if Wayne is carrying caliper paint in DriveWerks yet. Check there first. If not, Eastwood sells an excellent caliper paint kit. www.eastwood.com and do a search for "caliper paint"

KH:

I just painted my calipers this week on my 82 SC. It was pretty easy. I used the G2 kit I ordered recently with various other items from Pelican. I was able to clean up the fronts as I had them off to rebuild the calipers. The backs were cleaned while they were on with the brake cleaner included in the kit and a brush. Just make sure to keep it away from the rubber seals per the instructions. Use in a well ventilated area as it is pretty nasty stuff. I ended up putting three coats on them while the calipers were on the car. I used silver since they are the original calipers and not big red bembos. They should look good behind the recently repainted (black) fuchs on a silver car. I'll try to post some before/after pictures shortly.

Because you can? Because when you do anything why not do it right? Why clean my wheel well? Why replace my bearings while I have the wheel apart? Probably didn't need it...

Anyway before and after

The vinyl decals are supposed to be good to 300 degrees - haven't had a chance to test them yet.

And yes, they are stock Carrera calipers - and I did it because they look good. I used I temp brake paint in a can from the autoparts store down the street (800 degree paint). New lines, bearings, etc from our wonderful host.

Close up.

Anyone tried the VHT brake paint in a spray can?

My front calipers are off and cleaned, now would be a good time to paint them.

Caliper decals from www.caliperdecals.com

You have to request a custom cut - I think they are 2 1/4 inches for the Carrera - nice guy to deal with...

VHT - I'm guessing Very High Temperature? That;s what I used - spray paint in the can - specfically for brakes - Discount/Advance Auto special - maybe 5.99 for the can?

I really like the way they look poking through my fuchs!

Oh, and since my calipers have been rebuilt - I have a harder pedal - and no more moaning from the sticking caliper! Looks good - works good!

Thanks Jeremy, yeah, 6 bucks a can or so. We'll see how it holds up. Can always bead blast it off later . I tried the G2 stuff on a friends calipers, didn't like how thick it was, sloppy.

And that's what I figured. You just have to be careful reassembling - don't want to chip your new paint and the VHT paint is a little more brittle.

Other than that - it's pretty straight forward.

I hear that the two part brusable paint is the way to go for longevity. Any comments?

I used the two-part brushable paint. It's only been 6 months, but just spraying the calipers with water does a great job removing all dirt and dust. It's like the stuff is a non-stick surface, and there's no evidence of the paint coming off anywhere.

Can't get that page to work. I have found some Porsche caliper decals that are 150mm long (2.9"), and 5mm high. Is this small enough to fit the Carrera/SC brakes? I'm wondering if you have any measurments on yours.

Figured that out last night while I had all four calipers off. I painted mine silver/aluminum color. Sort of an understated look. Since my car is silver, I didn't want to go with red, although I may in the future. So... Since white probably won't show up on the silver calipers, what color would be acceptable? Black, red? Any opinions. What color did they use on the 993s that had silver calipers?
