Dry Sump
I've been on this forum for a while and heard the term "dry sump" many times. Can someone please explain this? Not sure how a lubrication system can be "dry".
By the way way, I've always been one of those guys who reads a lot, but have not really gotten into any serious maintenance. With one of my friends, we are starting a group so guys like me can really get into the maintenance part. We are going to start with a bunch of guys taking apart his 72 Chevelle Super Sport and putting it back together again. Some of the guys know what they're doing, and some don't. After that, we'll move to more difficult challenges, like P-Cars, or perhaps some other models. My friend has an 8-car garage to keep his toys in, and he doesn't mind letting us rip them apart for fun. - Bill

Sounds like you will be having some fun. When you get to the Pcars, don't forget about Wayne's books. They're a good deal. Dry sump just refers to the oil kept in the bottom of the engine case, especially while running. Most of the oil is pumped out of the case and into the holding tank in the fender area, so the oil sump in the bottom of the case is mostly "dry".
