CV joint rebuild - question about suitable glue
When I took my CV joints apart I noticed there was some sort of glue or sealand used to secure the rubber boot to the golden dust caps in addition to the metal clamp. What kind of glue should I use? I tried to search the archives but came up empty.
tnx, Ingo |
There is no glue that you should use. The CV boots are held in place by the metal straps, and they are sufficient to keep the grease inside (even when the grease heats up from the transmission and friction and become moe liquid).
Perhaps the previous owner used glue, thinking that it wold help - however, it is not necessary. |
The rubber is glued to the metal caps. To remove the boot you press off the cap and rubber boot as one piece. New boots will include the cap.

I have seen the mentioning of glue at least somewhere. Forgot if it was Bentley or something like that. Also the old boot was for sure glued on and the clamp was the old stock one. So it looks like this is how the factory did it at some point.
On the other hand I have gotten my hands on one of the Loebroe boot kits that came with a new dust cup attached to it but without glue. The boots I ordered from Pelican sure did not come with the dust cups. That leaves me puzzled as to whether I should just forget about the glue or keep searching. I SURE don't ever want to redo a project as messy as cleaning up CV joint grease. Ingo |
