Racing Targa

The factory never raced the 911 Targa. There have been a few private efforts. I came across this photo I took at the Watkins Glen 6-Hour Endurance in 79/80/81?? It's the only photo I have of this car.

Anybody got any photos of track-only racing Targas?

There is a guy running a targa in SCCA EP. I got this picture off of the SCCA archive site

Curt;
In most professional series such as the FIA sanctioned events, the Targas were not a great choice since they were too flexible, too heavy and the Targa bar put a noticable portion of that weight up high.

Because of the SCCA rules though, they were and are popular in SCCA club racing. This is because the SCCA rules allow the windshield to be replaced by a tiny piece of plastic (which reduced the frontal area) and the classified weight is the same as for the coupes. In most cases the racers use the roll cage to add enough rigidity to the chassis. Generally, this set-up has been popular in GT2 where a number of 911's have raced in the top-5 of at the Run-off's. Here's a picture of one from as recently as 2001.

Nein14-6, I believe that the car you have pictured in E-Prod is in fact a 912. Until recently E-Prod has been the home of 912's,1.6 liter 356's and 914 2.0's. 911's weren't eligible. Only in the last couple of years has the SCCA allowed the 2.0 and 2.2 engined 911's in E-Prod, soon after they let in the RX7's, 240Z's and a number of other cars that used to be in C-Prod and D-Prod. I wasn't aware that anyone had actually put an E-Prod 911 on the track.

Do you have the link where you got that picture?

I pulled one of my old copies of "Sport-Car" and according to the E-Prod results at the Runoff's there were two 912's in 1998.

Gregg Crandal who started 11th and finished 10th
Reid Vann who started 20th and finished 11th.

What kind of strange ideas are running around that head of yours Curt?

Is the grey wolf about to undergo a transformation?

No crazy ideas for the Gray Wolf! And I'm well aware of the limitations imposed by the Targa design. Just wondering. I'm also aware of the SCCA club racers, but I'm looking more for Targas in professional racing. That photo of mine was at the FIA World Championship for Makes. There must be a few others .....

Curt;
Judging by the SCCA Inspection stickers on the roll cage, I suspect that the car in your first post was a local SCCA racer who figured that he'd be fast enough to make the field and so he gave it a shot. I doubt that he was a regular runner in the FIA World Championship of Makes.

But then this car looks like it has a targa bar on it!

I wouldn't race a targa. I love mine and they are fun in the sun. There is however some truth to the old saying: "Flexi-Flyer"
