Preparing Fiberglass for Painting

Hi all,
I've got a ruf style fg bumper to put on once the weather gets nice. I'll fit it first then want to prepare it as best I can before taking it to a friend for painting. What steps should be followed to properly prepare it for painting? Its a Getty design bumper and looks like it was painted black then had some rough spots sanded out by Getty prior to shipping.
Thanks for any advice.

Keith –

1. Check for defects. (Repair with polyester filler if needed)
2. Remove any stripes, decals or parts.
3. Wash with degreaser.
4. Featheredge repaired area with D/A using 220 grit (this is to be done for the entire area that is to receive primer). Then featheredge outer area with 320 grit.
5. Scuff additional area out from end of D/A sanding 320 grit (about 3-4") with a red scotch brite pad, if necessary.
6. Blow off area.
7. Wash with Degreaser.
8. Mask off outside area to be primed with green paper.
9. Polyester filler must be applied to any gel coat that is broke open.
10. Prime with quality primer surfacer with flex additive.
11. Apply one medium wet coat of flex mixture (5 min. flash time or until entirely
dull).
12. Repeat step #11. Extend past the first coat.
13. Repeat step #11 Extend past second coat.
14. Allow third coat of flex mixture to dry: 4 hours at 70 degrees.
15. Spray guide coat on flex mixture with black aerosol.
16. Wet block-sand with P600 – P800 grit wet paper until guide coat is gone. (Do not sand through primer)

Good Luck,

Bryan
