air guides selections?

Ok I have determined that I have the correct alternator for my car with the correct fan housing and think I have the wronk air guide. Do they have several different models. the engine in question is an 81 3.0 with a marchel alt and external VR. Problem is it sticks out the back of the housing a bit to far interfering with the airguide bolt pattern. Please help want to get this straighted out before I have the alt rebuilt and end up having to go with another set up.

Thanks

Ben

So you got a housing that fit, but now your B+ terminal bolt that sticks out of the alternator is too big, and it hits the fiberglass air guide, so you can't tighten the air guide down, right? But you're SURE you have the right housing, because the alternator bolts protrude through the housing so you can get nuts on them. I bet that the bolts the wires attach to are hitting your early air guide at the top, so you can't fit the air guide on, right?

You PROBABLY need an airguide from a Carrera that is big enough to fit over those bolts AND accomodate the large internal voltage regulator at the bottom. I had the same problem on my '71, the small airguide just won't fit around the back of a Carrera alternator. I ended up cutting it away to fit, but don't recommend that you do that.

Loren? Warren? Can you verify that the Carrera airguide is different?

I checked the fan housing numbers with my 914-6 which has a 2.7 in it. It has the same housing and the same alternater in it (external voltage reg marchel) the air guides look the same but the problem is the alt sticks out the back side of the fan housing (back side being towards the front of the car when installed) about 3/16 of an inch to far and the air guide won't over it. I did check part numbers etc on the housing and everything seems good to go. However I don't care what I have to do I just want to fix it right. I am unsure if the alternator in this car is a little higher output than the one in my 914-6 causing the problems in the rear or not. I did not measure that part. any thoughts
