Question ok...now what do i do?

it's my stock '74, excellent condition car with 85k miles. i've felt a clunkiness, especially noticeable with hand on the shifter, when i tap the gas loading the transmission up for a long time. know what i mean? feels like play in the drivetrain somewhere to me.

what have i done? what $$$? here...
replaced both rear axles with bolt-in's a few months ago. at xmas, replaced all engine and tranny mounts with sport versions all the way around. i don't think i can notice any change. is this just normal to have a lot of play in this generation? just kinda bugs me. i've heard spring plate bushings mentioned...i just don't know...not really anybody in arkansas to commiserate with on this one...

Life is short, so you really have to be careful what you choose to worry about. I know this clunking you're describing. It's just always there, regardless of the make and model of vehicle. IF you've got new halfshafts and new motor mounts, then.....

Relax.

this may be the best of all possible answers. i just needed to hear if i'm alone in experiencing this symptom. i've had a nagging sense that it's just gonna be there...

on the bright side, i do have brand new half shafts and mounts...now i'm good for the next thirty years...

Check that the CV's are tight and that the sportmounts are tight. Also, check the the sifting bushings are OK as well as the associated bolts.

jim,
i re-torqued the half shaft bolts a week later to check for loosening...all was well.

the engine mounts i just tightened. i didn't tighten as much as physically possible, especially the smaller side bolts, i was afraid they could be broken. would you have given them all the animal tightening?

replaced all shifter bushings over a year ago...

Chill: Chill, man. I know exactly what you're talking about. I resolve it to my sometime hamfisted shifting with too much load; the 915 simply didn't like it. It likes things smooth.

The tranny has a personality as you've probably just found out.

alright, alright...i'll try to chill!

it's not while i'm shifting...that part is fine. occasionally i do shift from 1st to 2nd (not speed shifting) too quickly and it kinda 'pops' into 2nd...this isn't that.

it's just that while in any gear, if i just kinda tap the throttle, to put under load, it feels klunky to me...like play in the drivetrain somewhere. at this point, i'm inclined to think it's in the tranny...maybe the differential gears. and maybe you're right...maybe all 915's have a fair amount of noticeable play like this. i'm in arkansas guys...i don't run into other members here with cars i can drive for comparison! now, if i still owned that ford truck...
