Engine Electrical Question

Can you identify these wires? I purchase the car with the engine in boxes and am now installing the engine. I have this pair of wires that have been cut and capped off and I'm not sure if they are important or not. Supposedly the car ran before disassembly. The wires are brown and gray. They appear to be tied in with the ignition wiring harness but it's hard to tell in my garage at night in 18 degree weather. Can anyone identify?

It is hard to see the capped wires but one thing I notice is that you don't have an external voltage regulator mounted on the electrical panel. Do you have the updated alternator with the built in voltage regulator?

Pat:

I'm looking at your pic and have a question. What are the wires near the center of the bottom of the pic? They are connected by a cylindrical connector with one ground (brown) going to the console with a red to the left and a green to the front of the engine bay. My connector is not connected to anything. It's a three prong palstic cylinder just hanging. Any ideas?

Jim, that's a test plug. You can use it to test the oxygen sensor duty cycle. You'd hook a dwell meter up between the brown wire (ground) and one of the others. Green, I think. Anyway, with the dwell meter set to the "4-cylinder" option, the dwell should oscillate between about 40 and 50, centering on 45. that would mean your O2 sensor is working, and it thinks your mixture is correct. A higher reading suggests a lean mixture. Lower means a rich mixture.

Sup:

So it's not a delayed detonation device waiting to go off if left unplugged? I can relax. I'm about to reinstall my engine and could find no male for the female connector. I'll rest easier now, Thanks.

Jimcry:

Superman is correct it is the O2 test connector. I traced those wires back to the lambda control box and hooked up a dwell meter in hte car that way I was able to monitor the reading under all conditions. I also had plenty of lead so I could move the dwell so I could see it and make adjustments to the mixture.

"Do you have the updated alternator with the built in voltage regulator?" per Pat.

I'm not sure. How would I know? Sorry, when it comes to the electrical stuff, I'm not very knowledgeable. What should I look for on the alternator to know if I have a built in voltage regulator?

I'm hoping you are correct and this these wires are fine being capped off.

In the picture I posted there is a white box with a yellow rectagle on it that is the external voltage regulator located in its normal mounting position. In the picture you posted there is no voltage regulator mounted. That is why I asked if you had the internal type alternator.

I assume I must. I'll look at it and see if I see something that resembles that box.
